Palestinian Refugee Ideology: An Enquiry into Key Metaphors
This essay explores a set of key metaphors in Palestinian refugee ideology. Ideology is defined as the conceptual frameworks through which problematic social reality is mediated and interpreted. Key metaphors are those which dominate a conceptual system by virtue of their power to elaborate on or to summarize social reality. Key metaphors of Palestinian ideology are discussed here in terms of their lexicographic range, and their spectrum of inter…
Religious Paradigms of the Sudanese Mahdiyah
This paper examines the paradigms in the career of Muhammad Ahmad, the Sudanese Mahdf. It attempts to lay bare the effects of these paradigms on political process in the Mahdfyah, and argues that this case has implications for the understanding of other fundamentalist or reformist movements. Three inter-related paradigms are defined in the Mahdf's career, which when viewed in temporal order, reveal a progression toward increasingly idiosyncratic …
