This essay explores a set of key metaphors in Palestinian refugee ideology. Ideology is defined as the conceptual frameworks through which problematic social reality is mediated and interpreted. Key metaphors are those which dominate a conceptual system by virtue of their power to elaborate on or to summarize social reality. Key metaphors of Palestinian ideology are discussed here in terms of their lexicographic range, and their spectrum of interpretation as elicited from individuals. They are shown to be ambiguous; that is, they are susceptible to a broad range of interpretation. This ambiguity is discussed with regard to its effects in the "elaborating" and "summarizing" modes of key symbols in general. In conclusion, suggestions are made as to the implications of the results of this study for an understanding of Palestinian political process
