From Hospital to Home
BACKGROUND: People with stroke and their families face numerous challenges as they leave hospital to return home, often experiencing multifaceted unmet needs and feelings of abandonment. The essential elements of an intervention intended to support transition-to-home after stroke are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the project was to engage in a co-design process to identify the key components of a pragmatic intervention to inform a transition-to-…
Irony and Identity
The Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum retains many arrangements of popular songs that were performed by the men's orchestra of Auschwitz I. These songs often bear highly ironic but tragically relevant titles: "Letters That Never Arrived," "Hours That One Can Never Forget," "Sing a Song When You're Sad." A number of these songs are in the form of manuscript parts, written with great care in black ink on Beethoven Papier…
Bartók’s Sonatas for Violin and Piano nos. 1–2
In the focus of this paper a survey of the draft score will disclose major corrections of the concept and discuss deleted and rewritten sections in both Sonatas for Violin and Piano no. 1 (1921) and no. 2 (1922). A close study of the unusual-type preliminary sketches of the First Sonata in his so-called Black Pocket-Book (facsimile edition: 1987) already gave insight into Bartók’s atypical composition when he had to work without a piano at hand f…
Predictors of Adherence to Lifestyle Recommendations in Stroke Secondary Prevention
The risk of recurrent vascular events is high following ischaemic stroke or transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Unmanaged modifiable risk factors present opportunities for enhanced secondary prevention. This cross-sectional study ( n = 142 individuals post-ischaemic stroke/TIA; mean age 63 years, 70% male) describes adherence rates with risk-reducing behaviours and logistical regression models of behaviour adherence. Predictor variables used in the…
Giving Voice to a Foxtrot from Auschwitz-Birkenau
The Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum preserves a number of manuscripts of popular songs arranged by members of the Auschwitz I Men’s Orchestra. These songs, written with great care in black ink on Beethoven Papier brand music paper, often bear highly ironic, but also tragically relevant titles, such as “Letters That Never Arrived,” “Hours That One Can Never Forget,” “Sing a Song When You’re Sad.” In this article I des…
Popular Music as a Barometer of Political Change
This chapter examines popular music as a barometer of political change in democratizing Taiwan. After providing a brief overview of developments in Taiwan’s pop music world as they relate to political change, the essay details the innovative musical creations of the late 1980s through the 1990s that heralded the regime change of May 2000, when Chen Shui-bian was elected President, thus ending the Chinese Nationalist Party’s fifty years of unbroke…
A Case Study of Brazilian Popular Music and Censorship
This article examines the censorship of popular music in Brazil by focusing on the experience of songwriter Ivan Lins during the country’s military dictatorship. Since the late 1970s, Lins was included in the government list of “suspects” of the musical scene; his songs were often censored and his performances placed under surveillance. Before analyzing Lins’s musical production, its meanings, and its relationship with the regime’s repression for…
Veiled Voices
This chapter examines music censorship in post-revolutionary Iran, from the 1979–1989 revolutionary period to the reconstruction period (1989–1997), the period of political development (1997–2005), and up to the Ahmadinejād era (2005–2013). After providing a brief background on music censorship in Iran prior to the revolution of 1978–1979, the chapter chronicles developments in music censorship in the country, from Ayatollah Khomeini’s ban on all…
Music and Censorship in Vietnam since 1954
This chapter traces the history of music censorship in Vietnam since 1954 with reference to a broad range of music genres. It discusses music censorship from 1954 to 1975, when Vietnam was divided into North and South. The tight ideological control established by the Vietnamese Communist Party in the North is compared with music movements linked to antiwar protests in the South. The chapter then examines the period of severe censorship following …
The Oxford Handbook of Music Censorship
This volume is a collection of thirty in-depth studies of music censorship from the eighth century to the present and covers music ranging from Gregorian chant to eighteenth-century opera to contemporary pop music. It includes studies from every continent and consists of six sections. Section I explores religion both as an object of censorship and as a censoring agent. Section II focuses on the censorship of three iconic operas during the Enlight…
Mortality and Economic Costs From Regular Cigar Use in the United States, 2010
Objectives. We estimated annual mortality, years of potential life lost, and associated economic costs attributable to regular cigar smoking among US adults aged 35 years or older. Methods. We estimated cigar-attributable mortality for the United States in 2010 using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Smoking-Attributable Mortality, Morbidity, and Economic Costs methodology for smoking-related causes of death. The Cage Questionnaire
The CAGE questionnaire, a new brief alcoholism screening test, was administered to all patients (N = 366; 39 percent alcoholic) admitted to a psychiatric service over a one-year period. The authors indicate that the CAGE questionnaire is not a sensitive alcoholism detector if a four-item positive response is the criterion; however, if a two- or three-item criterion is used, it becomes a viable rapid alcoholism screening techniquefor large groups.
Education and Industry Today
During the last half-century, industry has increasingly recognised that it is actively and directly concerned with the education and training of all who look to it for a career. Many in industry today have jobs with little intrinsic value in them, done often solely for the wages alone. These men and women neither like what they do nor do what they like. Now a few are realising that no political or economic rearrangement will remove that attitude …
