Micro-costing analysis of a community-based psychiatric intervention among people who inject drugs in Haiphong, Vietnam
Costs for a community-based psychiatric intervention were very low in our study. This data can be used by policy makers in Vietnam to improve a mental health system that is poorly developed and expensive for the patient
Strained patient-provider relationship, unmotivated workforce, financial constraints, and stigma
This study examined current mental health practices in methadone treatment in Vietnam. We conducted 23 interviews with participants with methadone experiences ( n = 12), methadone physicians ( n = 6), counselors ( n = 5), and one focus group with family members. Mental health issues were primarily identified through casual observation, on-site support was limited, and referrals to psychiatric care were rarely pursued. Four factors shaped this sit…
Utility of self-report antiretroviral adherence for predicting HIV viral load among persons who inject drugs in Hai Phong Vietnam
In resource-limited settings, alternatives to HIV viral load testing may be necessary to monitor the health of people living with HIV. We assessed the utility of self-report antiretroviral therapy (ART) to screen for HIV viral load among persons who inject drugs in Hai Phong Vietnam, and consider differences by recent methamphetamine use. From 2016 to 2018 we recruited PWID through cross sectional surveys and collected self-report ART adherence a…
Gender, homelessness, hospitalization and methamphetamine use fuel depression among people who inject drugs
Depression is alarmingly frequent in PWID. In this study taking in account the chronological relationship between sociodemographic and clinical factors and depression, risk factors were identified in this specific setting of low-to-middle income country. The findings highlight the need to develop innovative targeted psychiatric interventions with the help of supporting peers
Development and assessment of a community‐based screening tool for mental health disorders among people who inject drugs
Mental Disorders Are Associated With Leukocytes Telomere Shortening Among People Who Inject Drugs
Premature biological aging, assessed by shorter telomere length (TL) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) alterations, has been reported among people with major depressive disorders or psychotic disorders. However, these markers have never been assessed together among people who inject drugs (PWIDs), although mental disorders are highly prevalent in this population, which, in addition, is subject to other aggravating exposures. Diagnosis of mental disor…
Gender Differences in HIV, HCV risk and Prevention Needs Among People who Inject drug in Vietnam
We examined gender differences among people who inject drug (PWID) in Hai Phong, Vietnam in term of blood-borne infections, risk behaviors, and access to care. Using respondent-driven-sampling surveys, we recruited 3146 PWID from 2016 to 2018. Inclusion criteria included a positive urine test for heroin and recent injection marks. There were 155 female PWID (4,9%), including 82 at RDS-2016, 32 at RDS-2017 and 38 at RDS-2018. The age mean was 36.3…
Maintaining HIV and HCV prevention and care for people who inject drugs despite Covid‐19 in Hai Phong, Vietnam”
The case of Hai Phong shows that it is possible, during times of COVID-19 pandemic, to maintain access to harm reduction and care and to prevent HIV and HCV transmission among PWID in a resource-limited setting where severe social distancing restrictions are implemented. Further research is needed to assess the consequences of long-term economic difficulties and the impact of actual spread of SARS-Cov2 that has since emerged in Haiphong

“My first 48 hours out”
BACKGROUND: Prisoners report much higher prevalence rates of drug use and more harmful consumption patterns than the general population. People who use drugs have above-average experiences with the criminal justice system in general, and the prison system and subsequent release situations in particular. Release from prison is associated with increased mortality rates among drug users due to the risk of overdose. The EU-funded project 'My first 48…
Continuity of care for drug users in prison and beyond
Social work in prisons is linked to specific tasks regarding the care for the people who are incarcerated. A multi-country qualitative study was set up to explore drug users’ and professionals’ perceptions of continuity of care in prison and beyond. It has been pointed out that continuity of care is associated with different barriers, especially regarding social work. Nevertheless, good practice examples do exist and could be implemented by socia…

Decrease in self-reported offences and incarceration rates during methadone treatment
Drug use in prisons
The existence of risky practices related to drug use inside prisons is a reality everywhere and is a major issue for the community as a whole. The level of implementation of harm reduction (HR) measures recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is very often poor and reveals inadequate concern about public health issues in the prison environment, without any respect for the princip…

steppic landscape interrupted by trees. The climatic conditions were close to those of an interglacial, from the Tardiglacial to the Early Glacial. The lithic industries are characterized by bifaces with various morphologies. The flaking and blank production indicate an opportunistic behaviour which did not develop any sophisticated operating scheme. On the whole non-standardized flake tools were badly manufactured : they mainly consist of notche…

Harmful alcohol consumption and patterns of substance use in HIV-infected patients receiving antiretrovirals (ANRS-EN12-Vespa Study)
Alcohol abuse affects secondary prevention and disease progression in HIV-infected patients, and adherence and response to treatment in those chronically treated. The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of harmful alcohol consumption (HAC) using various indicators and identify which groups of patients may require specific targeted interventions for HAC risk reduction. A cross-sectional survey, based on a random sample represent…
Determinants of benzodiazepine use in a representative population of HIV-infected individuals
HIV infection may result in stressful situations such as disclosure to others and could be a mediator between seropositivity status and psychiatric illness, depression, or anxiety. Several results have shown that anxiolytic use (mainly benzodiazepines [BDZ]) is highly prevalent in HIV-infected individuals, but few studies have highlighted to what extent this use could be associated with HIV disclosure. A national cross-sectional survey representa…
Limited access to HIV prevention in French prisons (ANRS PRI2DE)
A wide gap exists between HIV prevention policies and their application in prisons. Similar assessments in other countries may be needed to guide a global policy reform in prison settings. Adequate funding together with innovative interventions able to remove structural and ideological barriers to HIV prevention are now needed to motivate those in charge of prison health, to improve their working environment and to relieve French prisoners from t…
Methadone induction in primary care (ANRS-Methaville)
The ANRS-Methaville study is the first in France to use an interventional trial to improve access to OMT for drug users. Once the non-inferiority results become available, the Ministry of Health and agency for the safety of health products may change the the New Drug Application (NDA) of methadone and make methadone induction by trained primary care physicians possible. The trial is registered with the French Agency of Pharmaceutical Products (AFS…
Territorial governance has become an issue in the development of public policy and for those involved in territorial development. This paper presents an analytical framework for territorial governance developed as part of a multidisciplinary research project investigating organizational innovations in governance mechanisms. Developing such a framework for territorial governance is not straightforward. The mechanisms and tools depend on the contex…
