  • Of Cities and Slums

Pedro Cavalcanti Ferreira, Alexander Monge‐Naranjo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 5

The emergence of slums is a common feature in a country's path towards urbanization, structural transformation and development. Based on salient micro and macro evidence of Brazilian labor, housing and education markets, we construct a simple model to examine the conditions for slums to emerge. We then use the model to examine whether slums are barriers or stepping stones for lower skilled households and for the development of the country as a wh…

  • Education Quality and Returns to Schooling

Luiz Mário Brotherhood, Luiz Brotherhood et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2019•References: 13

We provide a new education quality index for states within a developing country using 2010 Brazilian data. This measure is constructed based on the notion that the financial returns obtained from an additional year of schooling can be seen as being derived from the value that market forces assign to this education. We use migrant data to estimate returns to schooling of individuals who studied in different states but work in the same labor market…

  • The Long-Term Effects of Conditional Cash Transfers on Child Labor and School Enrollment

    Open Access•Marcel Peruffo, Pedro Cavalcanti Ferreira•ARTICLE•Economic Inquiry•2017•Cited by: 6

This paper investigates the long-term effects of conditional cash transfers on school attainment and child labor. To this end, we construct a dynamic heterogeneous agent model, calibrate it with Brazilian data, and introduce a policy similar to the Brazilian Bolsa Família . Our results suggest that this type of policy has a very strong impact on educational outcomes, sharply increasing primary school completion. The conditional transfer is also a…

  • A Note on Growth, Welfare and Public Policy

    Open Access•Pedro Cavalcanti Ferreira•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2001•References: 6

ln this note the growth and welfare effects of fiscal and monetary policies are investigated in four economies where public investment is part of the productive process. It is shown that growth is maximized at positive levels of income tax and inflation but that there is no direct relationship between government size, productivity and growth or between inflation and growth. However, unless there are no transfers, no political conflict or public g…

  • Inequality and Unemployment in Europe

John Kenneth Galbraith, Pedro Conceição et al.•ARTICLE•New left review•1999

What is the relationship between inequality and unemployment? This question is perhaps the most important issue in the political economy of Europe, and it has relevance for other regions with developing transnational ties, including the United States and the North American region

  • Perspectivas de longo prazo da economia brasileira

    Open Access•Pedro Cavalcanti Ferreira•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•1998•References: 15

Open Access•Pedro Cavalcanti Ferreira, Roberto Ellery et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•1996•Cited by: 1•References: 14
