Neste artigo, investigamos as deficiências teóricas dos modelos tradicionais de crescimento neoclássico e como a nova literatura de crescimento endógeno surgiu para superar essas deficiências. Estudamos as razões teóricas da hipótese nos modelos tradicionais - alguns deles necessários para a existência de equilíbrio - que implicaram resultados empíricos contra-factuais, como convergência. Investigaremos como essas hipóteses foram relaxadas ou substituídas, até um ponto em que a nova literatura acaba trabalhando com retornos crescentes e modelos de concorrência monopolista de inspiração schumpeteriana que proporcionam crescimento sustentado e destruição criativa
