Do children use logic to spell logician? Implicit versus explicit teaching of morphological spelling rules
BackgroundIntervention studies have reported the advantage of teaching children about morphemes for spelling, but direct comparisons between explicit and implicit teaching have been examined systematically in relation to only a few morphological rules.AimsThis study compared explicit versus implicit teaching of the functional rule for the conservation of stem morphemes in derived words in English (e.g.,logicis conserved in the derivativelogiciani…
The connection between children's knowledge and use of grapho‐phonic and morphemic units in written text and their learning at school
BACKGROUND: Most psychologists who study children's reading assume that their hypotheses are relevant to children's success at school. This assumption is rarely tested. AIMS: The study's aims were to see whether two successful measures of the processes underlying children's learning to read and write are related to their success in English, science, and mathematics as measured by school assessments. SAMPLE: Data from the Avon Longitudinal Study o…
Promovendo a compreensão da composição aditiva em crianças surdas
O estudo tem como objetivo analisar a compreensão da composição aditiva dos números em crianças surdas. Este artigo descreve dois estudos que utilizaram a Tarefa de Compra de Nunes e Schliemann (1990) para investigar a compreensão da composição aditiva em crianças no contexto de contar dinheiro. No primeiro estudo, comparamos a compreensão da composição aditiva em crianças surdas à de crianças ouvintes da mesma idade. No segundo estudo, realizamo…
The relative importance of two different mathematical abilities to mathematical achievement
Background. Two distinct abilities, mathematical reasoning and arithmetic skill, might make separate and specific contributions to mathematical achievement. However, there is little evidence to inform theory and educational practice on this matter.Aims. The aims of this study were (1) to assess whether mathematical reasoning and arithmetic make independent contributions to the longitudinal prediction of mathematical achievement over 5 years and (…
Can children's spelling of schwa vowels in stems be improved
Children in the early grades of primary school do not seem to have much awareness of morphemes. In this study, a priming paradigm was used to try to detect early signs of morphological representation of stems through a spelling task presented to Portuguese children (N= 396; age range 6 to 9 years). Primes shared the stem with the targets and contained well-articulated, stressed vowels; the stems of the target words contained non-stressed schwa vo…

Improving Literacy by Teaching Morphemes
Morphemes and literacy
Take a fairly simple word like “unforgettable”. Its meaning is clear and widely understood, but the word has three different parts to it, and it is the combination of these three parts that gives the word its final and overall meaning
Morphemes and literacy
When we began the research (Chapters 3-6) on improving schoolchildren’s morphemic knowledge, we had reasons for optimism but also for caution. We were optimistic because of the example of previous work on improving another form of explicit linguistic awareness in schoolchildren, which was their phonological awareness. In the past 25 years of the twentieth century, many research studies established that the awareness that children have of sounds b…
Validation of a Parent Outcome Questionnaire From Pediatric Cochlear Implantation
This paper analyzes the reliability and validity of a questionnaire designed by Archbold, Lutman, Gregory, O'Neil, and Nikolpoulos (2002) for the assessment of pediatric cochlear implantation. Parents of 61 youngsters (age range 5 to 16 years), who had the implant for at least 3 years, responded to the questionnaire and to an interview. The alpha reliability of the 11 questionnaire scales varied between .41 and .74. Content validity was assessed …
Transforming research on morphology into teacher practice
It is difficult to transform research evidence into teacher practice; indeed it has been argued that educational research is not very useful to teachers. In this paper, we explore teacher knowledge about a relatively new area of research concerning the role morphemes play in spelling, and seek to transform their practice. We find that although reference to morphology is beginning to be made in English policy documents, teachers make limited use o…

An Intervention Program for Promoting Deaf Pupils' Achievement in Mathematics
Our past research identified two aspects of deaf children's functioning that places them at risk for underachievement in mathematics. The first is their reduced opportunities for incidental learning, and the second is their difficulty in making inferences involving time sequences. This article examines the effectiveness of an intervention program to promote deaf children's numeracy that was designed to deal with these two factors. The design invo…
Mathematics learning as the socialization of the mind
This article offers an integrated theoretical perspective of work where mathematics is defined as a cultural practice. The implication of this definition is that to learn mathematics is to become socialized into the ways of knowing used in the community of mathematicians and mathematics teachers. Four aspects of the process of socialization are discussed: the redescription of meanings to fit with the systems of signs learned in mathematics, the i…
Morphological spelling strategies
Spelling with apostrophes and understanding possession
Background. Many spelling patterns are determined by the grammatical status of the words that contain them. An interesting example, which has been neglected in research till now, is the use of the apostrophe to denote possession.Aims. The aims of the two studies were (1) to find out how well children know that apostrophes can denote possession, before and after they have been taught this at school, (2) to see how sensitive this knowledge is to in…
Cultural practices and the conception of individual differences
Current conceptions of individual differences locate abilities inside the person. However, empowered by their cultural tools, humans can surpass their natural abilities. This chapter considers empirical evidence and theoretical issues that point out the need to reconceptualize individual differences in psychology
Psychology in Latin America
Psychology in Brazil is strongly oriented towards applications. University studies comprise training in both research and applications, but most students seek degrees with interests in applied psychology. Research may be basic or applied, but few researchers take advantage of the peculiarities of Brazilian culture to design their investigations. Significant contribu tions have been made in the study of reinforcement principles, animal behaviour, …
