  • A Study of Some Differences Between Backward and Normal Readers of Average Intelligence

Open Access•K Lovell, Andrew Gorton•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1968

S ummary . A group of 50 backward readers aged 9 to 10 years were selected from a total age group of 697 pupils in 16 primary schools of a small local education authority. A battery of tests was given to this group and to a control group of 50 pupils of normal reading ability. The test scores were intercorrelated, separately for the two groups, and in each case a Principal Components Analysis was carried out with rotation to a varimax criterion. …

  • Some Aspects of a Study of the Gifted Child

    Open Access•K Lovell, J B SHIELDS et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1967•Cited by: 1

S ummary . This paper reports on selected aspects of a study of fifty 8 to 10‐year‐old pupils all of whom obtained a WISC Verbal Score of 140 or more. Four issues are dealt with in connection with these gifted pupils: personality, mathematical attainment, logical thought, and the relationship between scores obtained on creativity tests and those obtained on the WISC Scales and on tests of logical thinking. The findings suggest that their teachers…

  • A Study of Some Cognitive and Other Disabilities in Backward Readers of Average Intelligence as Assessed by a Non-verbal Test

    Open Access•K Lovell, D Shapton et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1964•Cited by: 1

The application of a Sentence Reading Test and a Non-Verbal Intelligence Test to the whole of the third year pupils in twenty-two junior schools gave results for 1,205 children. Of the 139 who had a reading quotient of <80, seventy had standardized non-verbal scores ≥90. Fifty of these seventy backward readers were paired, individually, with average to good readers, matched for non-verbal test score, social class, sex and school. These two groups…

  • A Further Study of the Educational Progress of Children Who Had Received Remedial Education

Open Access•K Lovell, C Byrne et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1963

S ummary . Children who had received full‐time teaching in Remedial Centres of an English education authority were traced, and their reading ages assessed along with their understanding of certain arithmetic concepts. A Summary of the data obtained is given together with the inter‐relationships found between a number of the relevant variables

  • A Summary of a Study of the Reading Ages of Children Who Had Been Given Remedial Teaching

Open Access•K Lovell, E Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1962

S ummary . Children who had received remedial teaching in reading by the staff of a Child Guidance Centre of an English County Borough between January, 1955, and March, 1960, were traced, and their reading ages assessed. A summary of the data obtained is given, together with the interrelationships found between a number of the relevant variables

  • An Experimental Study of the Growth of Some Logical Structures

    Open Access•K Lovell, B Mitchell et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1962•Cited by: 3

A number of experiments of the type suggested by Piaget & Inhelder's book La genèse des structures logiques élémentaires were given to a population of primary and educationally subnormal (E.S.N.) special school children. The findings among the former group generally confirm those of the Geneva school. It has been possible to extend Piaget & Inhelder's findings by giving a number of tests to the same children, and by making a comparative study of …

  • A Follow‐up Study of Inhelder and Piaget's the Growth of Logical Thinking

    Open Access•K Lovell•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1961•Cited by: 3

A follow‐up study was made using ten of the experiments described by Inhelder and Piaget in their book The Growth of Logical Thinking. Two hundred subjects, most of whom were between 8 and 18 years of age, were examined, individually, on four experiments. The main stages in the development of logical thinking proposed by the authors are confirmed, although on a number of points there is disagreement. Attention is drawn to the educational implicat…

  • A Study of the Conservation of Weight in the Junior School Child

Open Access•K Lovell, Emma Ogilvie•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1961•Cited by: 2

S ummary . A large number of children in a junior school were tested, individually, along the lines initiated by Piaget, in an attempt to trace the development of the conservation of weight. While results very similar to those of Piaget are obtained using his criteria for invariance of weight, it is shown that children who are conservers of weight in his type of test, are often non‐conservers in other tests of conservation of weight. Overall, our…

  • A Study of the Conservation of Substance in the Junior School Child

Open Access•K Lovell, Emma Ogilvie•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1960•Cited by: 1

Almost all the children in a Junior school were tested individually, along the lines initiated by Piaget, in an effort to trace the development of the concept of invariance of substance, and to establish the arguments used by children to justify their answers. The three stages in the development of the concept given by Piaget have been confirmed, and some children give reasons for conservation similar to those proposed by him. On the other hand, …

  • A Follow-up Study of Some Aspects of the Work of Piaget and Inhelder on the Child's Conception of Space

    Open Access•K Lovell•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1959•Cited by: 1

In their book, The Child's Conception of Space, Piaget and Inhelder suggest that a child's first spatial concepts are topological ones and that these later lead to projective and euclidean concepts. A number of experiments from five chapters of their book were undertaken with some 140 children of nursery-school age. Part of the evidence presented agrees with that of the authors' and some is at variance with theirs. It is suggested that much more …

  • Some Influences Affecting Choice of Subjects in School and Training College

    Open Access•K Lovell, G E White et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Educational…•1958•Cited by: 1

A questionnaire was given to 102 male training college students followed by an interview at which fifteen main questions were put. Evidence was obtained suggesting that: The subjects (excluding crafts) which male students read at training college are those which they enjoyed most, or felt they did best in, during the latter years of the grammar school course. There is a significant association between the clearly displayed interests of the parent…
