Considerations for study design and analysis for ethically and culturally safe DNA methylation research in Aotearoa New Zealand
Epigenetic research, particularly DNA methylation (DNAm), holds significant potential for improving cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk prediction, yet its application must be guided by ethical and culturally responsive considerations. This paper examines the integration of a values-based framework to ensure the culturally safe conduct of DNAm research within the Multi-Ethnic New Zealand Study of Acute Coronary Syndromes (MENZACS) cohort. Grounded …
The dyslexia debate: Life without the label
In this paper, we discuss the problematic use of the term dyslexia. Noting that there are no unambiguous objective diagnostic criteria for ‘dyslexia’, in part because this term is understood in multiple ways, we discuss its relevance for informing educational assessment, intervention and resourcing. We conclude by highlighting how current approaches to dyslexia diagnosis and remediation typically fail to serve the needs of large numbers of strugg…
OP92 Improving the Effectiveness of Multidisciplinary Team Meetings for Patients with Chronic Diseases: Assessing the Predictors of Decision Implementation
Background Department of Health policy states that health care for chronic diseases should be delivered through multidisciplinary team meetings (MDMs). It is known that multidisciplinary teams should include certain features (for example commitment to leadership) to be effective. But additional factors need to be considered: e.g. the context in which MDMs operate, group decision processes, and patient related factors such as their preferences and…
Teacher efficacy and pupil behaviour: The structure of teachers' individual and collective beliefs and their relationship with numbers of pupils excluded from school
Background. Previous work has yielded knowledge of teachers' attributions for children's behaviour. Other studies have helped to develop understanding of teachers' efficacy beliefs. Little work has been undertaken to examine teachers' efficacy beliefs with regard to classroom behaviour.Aims. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between teachers' individual and collective beliefs about their efficacy with children's behaviour and wheth…
Does Dyslexia Exist
In this paper we argue that attempts to distinguish between categories of ‘dyslexia’ and ‘poor reader’ or ‘reading disabled’ are scientifically unsupportable, arbitrary and thus potentially discriminatory. We do not seek to veto scientific curiosity in examining underlying factors in reading disability, for seeking greater understanding of the relationship between visual symbols and spoken language is crucial. However, while stressing the potenti…
Evidence for the effectiveness of the Early Literacy Support programme
Background. It is widely recognized that effective interventions for poor reading involve training in phoneme awareness and letter-sound knowledge, linked in the context of reading books. From the applied perspective, it is important to gather data on the effectiveness of different forms of implementation of literacy support within this framework.Aim. We evaluate the effectiveness of the UK Early Literacy Support (ELS) programme (Department for E…

Groupware: Some issues and experiences
Groupware reflects a change in emphasis from using the computer to solve problems to using the computer to facilitate human interaction. This article describes categories and examples of group-ware and discusses some underlying research and development issues. GROVE, a novel group editor, is explained in some detail as a salient groupware example.
