Prior degree and student assessment performance
This study aimed to provide evidence to guide decisions on the type and timing of assessments in a graduate medical programme, by identifying whether students from particular degree backgrounds face greater difficulty in satisfying the current assessment requirements. We examined the performance rank of students in three types of assessments and also calculated the relative risk of failure in the summative assessments for four cohorts over all fo…
Positive health—some lay perspectives
Sixty members of a general population (comprising a convenience sample stratified for age and sex) underwent tape-recorded interviews to discover what they thought were the signs and determinants of good health. They were asked to identify the healthiest person they knew, how they knew the person was healthy, and what made (or kept) the person healthy. The responses were transcribed and analysed independently. The younger people identified as hea…
Students' Approaches to Learning in an Innovative Medical School
A slightly modified version of Entwistle and Ramsden's Approaches to Studying Inventory was administered to first-, third- and final-year students in an innovative medical school (response rate 84 per cent), to see whether the Inventory's constructs also apply to medical students, to see whether they might constitute a helpful framework for counselling students in academic difficulty, and to see whether the students' responses reflected the educa…
The Evolution and Impact of Programme Evaluation in a New Medical School
While the purpose, theory and method of evaluation of educational programmes are well‐documented, there is little published evidence on the actual evaluation of higher professional educational programmes and their outcomes. This paper outlines the background and development of programme evaluation in a new institution of higher professional education. It outlines current programme monitoring activities and their effects, and identifies the urgent…
Construct Validity of a Learning Environment Survey for Medical Schools
A survey devised by Marshall (1978) to measure students' perceptions of their medical school was completed by undergraduates at two schools with radically different approaches to medical education. The survey proved to be reliable in terms of its internal consistency, and exhibited strong validity for a construct of school learning environment. Differences found between the two schools were not specific to medical education, which raised the pros…
