Australian medical students (N = 645) were asked at the beginning of their training to rank the importance of a list of motivations relevant to their choice of medicine as a career. A Study of the Concurrent Validity of the Screening Test of Adolescent Language with Recent Immigrants
The concurrent validity of the Screening Test of Adolescent Language was investigated by correlating the total scores for 152 first-year medical students with their performances on the Woodcock Language Proficiency Battery. The sample included many recent immigrants from southeastern Asia who were not yet highly proficient in English. Two hundred and six first-year students aged between 18 and 21 years, from two Melbourne tertiary colleges, reported their sleep patterns and stressful life events associated with transition to tertiary studies. They completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) which assesses psychological symptoms. Eighty of these students were tested both at mid-year and again at the end of the academic year. Form A of the Personal Description Questionnaire (PDQ), an Australian sex-role scale, was administered to 156 female and 110 male subjects. Scale and subscale means, standard deviations, and gender differences are reported. Factor analyses of the separate male and female data showed a very high degree of correspondence between the factor structures. The analyses yielded four factors, three of which clearly reflected the scales of the PDQ design. …
