  • Alain Bresson. The Making of the Ancient Greek Economy: Institutions, Markets, and Growth in the City-States

    John Davies•ARTICLE•The American Historical Review•2017

Since the 1890s, the economic history of the Greco-Roman world has been a battleground between incompatible models, with the Greek city-states presenting the most intractable challenge of all: Was theirs an open Hansa-like culture of manufacture and seaborne exchange, or a fragmented world of autarkic agro-pastoral microstates frozen by status boundaries, static technologies, and an ideology of leisure, or even a largely market-free world of reci…

  • The influence of academic culture on quality management system ISO 9001 maintenance within Malaysian universities

Siti Arni Basir, John Dwyfor Davies et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Higher Education…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 47

This study investigates the influence of the elements of academic culture on quality management system ISO 9001 maintenance within Malaysian universities. There is a dearth of empirical studies on maintaining ISO 9001, particularly in the higher education context. From the literature review, academic culture was classified according to four elements - academic freedom, individualism, professionalism and collegiality. Two case studies were conduct…

  • Retrospect and Prospect

John Davies•CHAPTER•Communities and Networks in the…•2015

This chapter looks back—and forward—to review how network analysis might be used as a means to overcome areas of activity neglected within the traditional discourses of Greek history. After reviewing the movements that have taken place within the discipline in the last half century, the author places the other contributions to this book into a wider historiographic context and highlights the importance of epigraphic evidence in particular for ass…

  • The Historical Commentary

    John Davies•CHAPTER•Classical Commentaries•2015

This chapter uses Frank Walbank’s Historical Commentary on Polybius as a palmary example of the sub-genre of ‘the historical commentary’, and notes that the sub-genre is largely ignored by the literature on ‘commentary theory’. It traces its emergence in C19 Germany and Britain, reviews the various formats which were used for it, and tries to explain why, from among a wide spectrum of ‘historical texts’ from Classical Antiquity, only a very limit…

    A J Kent, John Davies•ARTICLE•Cartography and Geographic…•2013•References: 2

As part of its secret military mapping program the Soviet Union produced large-scale maps and plans of hundreds of towns and cities around the world. The end of the Cold War and the subsequent fall of communism saw the eventual closure or transformation of cartographic factories in the former Soviet republics, and, for the first time, these highly detailed products of geospatial intelligence became available to a wider audience. This paper focuse…

  • Epigraphy and the Historical Sciences

John Davies, John Wilkes•BOOK•Epigraphy and the Historical…•2012

This volume publishes all but three of the plenary lectures that were delivered during the XIIIth International Congress of Greek and Roman Epigraphy, held at Oxford in September 2007. Its format differs from traditional Congress Proceedings, but this is not the only innovation. The aim of the Oxford Congress, reflected in the title of the volume, was to present epigraphy as a specialism to a wider readership, both academic and other, and in that…

It reviews developments in Britain within the study of antiquity in the last twenty years, but also reviews current and likely future transformations of the wider environment, both fiscal-financial and technological – all of which …

  • 'My Name Is Not Natasha': How Albanian Women in France Use Trafficking to Overcome Social Exclusion (1998-2001)

John Davies•BOOK•My name is not Natasha'•2009

This book challenges every common presumption that exists about the trafficking of women for the sex trade. It is a detailed account of an entire population of trafficked Albanian women whose varied experiences, including selling sex on the streets of France, clearly demonstrate how much the present discourse about trafficked women is misplaced and inadequate. The heterogeneity of the women involved and their relationships with various men is cle…

  • Posttraumatic stress symptoms following childbirth and mothers' perceptions of their infants

Open Access•John Davies, Pauline Slade et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•2008•Cited by: 5•References: 39

Postpartum psychological distress can adversely affect the early mother–infant relationship; however, this has not been investigated in relation to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following childbirth. This article explores whether PTSD symptoms relating to labor and delivery are associated with mothers' early perceptions of their infant. Using labor and childbirth as the stressor criterion, 211 women were assessed at 6 weeks' postpartum for…

  • How to Use a Trafficked Woman. The Alliance between Political and Criminal Trafficking Organisations

    Open Access•John Davies, Benjamin Davies•ARTICLE•Recherches Sociologiques•2008•Cited by: 1•References: 16

The principal argument of this paper is that migrant women with secure mobility rights and supportive social networks can avoid or mitigate many trafficking harms. However the paper contends that some actors have conspired to prevent such circumstances so as to pursue diverse political agendas at the expense of migrant women. The paper’s analysis restructures the trafficking contest from organised criminals versus law enforcement agencies to prin…

  • Understanding sponsorship and sponsorship relationships—multiple frames and multiple perspectives

Open Access•Kate Daellenbach, John Davies et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2006

It is widely recognized that many arts, sports and charitable organizations rely heavily on income from sponsorship. This paper selectively discusses the literature examining sponsorship, following the approach of Lynall et al. ( 2003 ) and the life cycle literature, following Quinn and Cameron ( 1983 ). The paper adopts a meta‐framework making use of multiple framing to develop complementary theoretic views and perspectives of the nature of spon…

  • Hellenistic Economies

Zofia H Archibald, John Davies et al.•BOOK•Hellenistic Economies•2006•Cited by: 19

The economies of classical and Mediterranean antiquity are currently a battleground. Some scholars see them as lively and progressive, even proto-capitalist: others see them as static, embedded in social action and status relationships.Focusing on the central period of the Mediterranean 330-30 BC, this book contributes substantially to the debate, by juxtaposing general questions of theory and model-building with case-studies which examine specif…

  • The Gortyn Laws

Open Access•John Booth Davies, John Davies•CHAPTER•The Cambridge Companion to…•2005

Gortyn, like the rest of classical Crete, presents a paradox. Though we know little of its history in the archaic and classical periods from literary sources, and though we know virtually nothing about individuals, the exceptional richness of its legal inscriptions has made the city a prime focus of attention for historians both of Greek law and of Greek society. Yet, although no survey of Greek law can neglect these texts, they present intractab…

  • Ethnic Competition and the Forging of the Nation-State of Fiji

    John Davies, John E Davies•ARTICLE•The Round Table•2005•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Since independence in 1970, ethnic rivalry between Fiji's indigenous and Indian populations has become increasingly manifested in the political arena, as demonstrated in the coups of 1987 and 2000. The root of this rivalry is seen here to lie in an ongoing ‘cold war’ for framing the defining qualities of the Fijian nation. Mobilizing this are differing community experiences of the country's past and hopes for its future. These differing experienc…

In contrast to the crisis of the 1980s, which largely affected middle-income countries burdened by private commercial debt, the present crisis and ensuing discussions have centered on the poorest countries, most of which are in subsaharan Africa. This article explores the developing country debt issue from the perspective of a bila…

  • Postmodernism and the Sociological Study of the University

    J G Davies, John Davies•ARTICLE•Review of higher education/ The…•1999

Given the provocative views that postmodernists advance about universities, those engaged in sociological work on universities must critically engage this scholarship. This essay concludes that, although postmodernists offer some highly insightful views, the inherent limitations of postmodernism prohibit the kind of analysis necessary to comprehend what ought to be pivotal to any sociology of universities--the relationships between academic insti…

This paper is offered as a contribution to the larger task of providing a comprehensive study of South Africa's universities during the era of apartheid (1948-1990). Because of the centrality of the state to apartheid, the focus adopted is that of the role of the state in university affairs. The inadequacies of state theory in general are acknowledged, but, it is argued nonetheless, that the state warrants special consideration, provided the limi…

Specifically, the calculated redirection of consumption priorities by those reduced to subsistence levels is embodied in the utility function and the biological necessity of consuming sufficient nutrition to support health is modeled as a subsistence constraint. This methodology is then applied to the potato culture that existed i…

Estimates for 1974 show 144,000 new acceptors (8% of married women of reproductive age), totaling 50,000 couple-years of protection.
