Imagery and motor learning: A special issue on the neurocognitive mechanisms of imagery and imagery practice of motor actions
Human beings are able to imagine actions with the aim to change movement coordination and to learn particular movements. Meta-analyses to date have shown that when individuals systematically engage in imagery of a motor action without overt behavior this can improve motor performance and facilitate motor learning. Despite a considerable body of research in neuroscience, psychology, and sport science, however, there is at present no consensus on t…
Enhancing motor imagery practice using synchronous action observation
In this paper, we discuss a variety of ways in which practising motor actions by means of motor imagery (MI) can be enhanced via synchronous action observation (AO), that is, by AO + MI. We review the available research on the (mostly facilitatory) behavioural effects of AO + MI practice in the early stages of skill acquisition , discuss possible theoretical explanations, and consider several issues related to the choice and presentation schedule…

Use of X-Ray Fluorescence Microscopy for Studies on Research Models of Hepatocellular Carcinoma
Introduction: TheraSphere ® microspheres containing yttrium 90 Y are among many radioembolization agents used clinically to reduce liver tumor burden, and their effects on cancer volume reduction are well-established. At the same time, concerns about off target tissue injury often limit their use. Deeper investigation into tissue distribution and long-term impact of these microspheres could inform us about additional ways to use them in practice.…
Jürgen Heyde, „Das neue Ghetto“? Raum, Wissen und Identität im langen 19. Jahrhundert. (Hamburger Beiträge zur Geschichte der deutschen Juden, Bd. 52.) Göttingen, Wallstein 2019

Between Heimat and Hatred: Jews and the Right in Germany, 1871–1935
It is almost common knowledge that the majority of German Jews during the Empire and the Weimar Republic were politically liberal. However, a significant minority held decidedly conservative or even right-wing convictions. Philipp Nielsen’s book is the first to study this group. It adds an important element to our understanding of German-Jewish history and provides fascinating new insight into the fragility of the position of Jews within German s…
The Postcolonial Buber: Orientalism, Subalternity, and Identity Politics in Martin Buber's Political Thought
This article analyzes central elements of Martin Buber's political thinking from a postcolonial perspective. It examines Buber's view of the "Orient," his ideas about the social and economic constitution of the Arab-Jewish commonwealth in Palestine, and his attitude toward the evolving national conflict between Jews and Arabs. Buber's Zionism, despite its deep roots in European nationalist ideologies and entanglement with European colonialist ide…
Social Democracy and Nationalism
Despite the antinationalist tendencies of Marxism and the internationalist goals of socialist politics, various forms of nationalism developed within the social democratic movements that emerged in Europe in the nineteenth century. The basis for this was the growing political and social integration of the working class and a gradual revision of Marxist theory. Social Democracy mostly featured an integrationist type of nationalism that aimed at an…
Strange Encounters: Social Democracy and Radical Nationalism in Weimar Germany
This article analyzes a current within Weimar Social Democracy that aimed at the transformation of socialism into a nationalist socialism. This current originated in the Hofgeismarkreis of the Jungsozialisten in the postwar years, whose members joined forces during the 1920s with notable intellectuals who advocated ethical and religious concepts of socialism and founded the journal Neue Blätter für den Sozialismus in 1930. These socialists were a…
The coordination of two‐effector actions: Spoon‐feeding and intermanual prehension
The aim of this study was to assess whether kinematic characteristics of unimanual (one‐effector) prehension movements can also be found in tasks where the transport and grasp components are distributed across separate effectors. Expt 1 compared prehension with spoon‐feeding and showed that a number of kinematic landmarks, such as time to peak aperture, were similar. An unexpected difference between the tasks was that the onsets of the transport …
On relations between perceiving, imagining and performing in the learning of cyclical movement sequences
In three experiments, the effects of observational, mental and physical practice on the performance of cyclical movement sequences were investigated. Experiment 1 revealed that repeated demonstrations of the criterion motion were sufficient for adequate reproductions of the movement form and that mental or physical practice had only small additional effects. Furthermore, consistency of movement tempo and consistency of relative timing, normally s…
