Age-Related Differences in Learning and Short-Term-Memory from Childhood to the Senium
Learning disabilities and intelligence test results: A model based on a principal components analysis of the Wisc‐R
The unrotated principal components analysis of the WISC‐R normative data yields a bipolar factor 2 which corresponds to a verbal‐non‐verbal continuum of test material. A review of published WISC‐R and WISC data from learning disabled (LD) children reveals that the amount of deficit shown by these children on any particular subtest is closely proportional to the degree of verbal content, as expressed by the factor 2 score coefficient of that subte…
On the Relative Effects of Different Sources of Variation in Dichotic Listening Performance
Among the many possible sources of variation in dichotic listening performance, two in particular have been accorded considerable theoretical importance. The influence of order effect has usually been regarded as an index of the functioning of some short‐term storage process. The influence of ear asymmetry has commonly been taken to reflect perceptual functioning. Most published studies have examined only one or other of these influences, so that…
Effects of Age on Short‐term Storage and Serial Rote Learning
Previous studies have shown that, as age advances, there is a progressive decrease in the ability to respond sequentially to simultaneous stimuli. It has been suggested that this impairment with age is due to a decline in the efficiency of some short‐term storage process. In those studies, however, the relation of this process to performance on other learning tasks had not been traced in normal subjects, nor have the possible effects of changes i…
Personal Traits and Maternal Attitudes in Relation to Blood Lipid Levels
A group of normal students with high fasting cholesterol levels on a fat-free diet appeared in a previous investigation to be driving and aggressively ambitious as compared with a low-cholesterol group. Although the former were not overtly anxious, their personal dissatisfaction included fears that such traits might alienate them from others. In the present experiment, a larger sample including students with “normal” as well as “high” and “low” c…
