  • Developing Evidence‐Based Interventions for Foster Children: An Example of a Randomized Clinical Trial with Infants and Toddlers

    Open Access•Mary Dozier, Mary E Dozier et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Issues•2006•Cited by: 24•References: 58

Children who enter foster care have usually experienced maltreatment as well as disruptions in relationships with primary caregivers. These children are at risk for a host of problematic outcomes. However, there are few evidence‐based interventions that target foster children. This article presents preliminary data testing the effectiveness of an intervention, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch‐up, to target relationship formation in young childr…

  • Diurnal and annual variation of adrenocortical activity in the squirrel monkey

    Open Access•Christopher L Coe, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1995

Diurnal changes in basal cortisol levels and stress reactivity were assessed in male and female squirrel monkeys. Blood samples were collected at four‐hour intervals throughout the day and night in the mating and nonmating seasons. Basal cortisol levels in females were similar in both seasons, but males tended to have higher cortisol levels during the mating season, especially at night. For both sexes, cortisol secretion was highest between 0400 …

  • Impact of perceived self-efficacy in coping with stressors on components of the immune system

Sue A Wiedenfeld, Ann O''Leary et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•1990•Cited by: 6

This experiment examined the impact of experimentally varied perceived self-efficacy in exercising control over stressors on components of the immunological system. Immunological changes while coping with phobic stressors were measured within an intrasubject control design that included a baseline phase, an efficacy-acquisition phase, and a maximal-efficacy phase. In each of these phases, perceived coping self-efficacy, level of autonomic and end…

  • Acute stress response in anorexia nervosa a pilot study

    Open Access•Hans Steiner, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•Child Psychiatry & Human…•1988

  • Responsiveness of adult squirrel monkeys ( Saimiri sciureus ) to mother‐infant separation

Open Access•Jerry L Vogt, Laurie Siperstein et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1982

This study tested the responsiveness of adult male squirrel monkeys living with mother‐infant dyads to various conditions of mother‐infant separation. During each of the five weekly experimental 30‐minute sessions, as well as during undisturbed basal conditions, the behavioral and hormonal responses of five adult males were assessed. The results indicated that only one experimental condition—that involving the actual manipulation of the separated…

  • Subspecies differences in hormonal and behavioral responses after group formation in squirrel monkeys

    Open Access•Carol A Gonzalez, Michael B Hennessy et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Primatology•1981

The behavioral and hormonal responses of squirrel monkeys of the Bolivian and Guyanese subspecies were compared after a group formation procedure. Two groups of each subspecies, consisting of five females and three males (later reduced to two) were observed daily during the week of group formation and for nine weeks following removal of a single male from each group. Measures of plasma cortisol were examined in the females after the initial group…

  • Litter Size, Emotionality, and Avoidance Learning

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1963

In a recent experiment concerned with the interaction of genetic and ontogenetic determinants of adult behavior (Levine & Broadhurst, in press), rats from the Maudsley Reactive and Nonreactive strains which have been selected for emotional defecation, were subjected to controlled infantile stimulation (Levine, 1960) and compared with 40 nontreated controls for open-field emotionality and avoidance conditioning. Excluded from the main experiment w…

  • Behavioural Consistency in Strains of Rats Selectively Bred for Emotional Elimination

    Open Access•P L Broadhurst, Seymour Levine•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1963

An experiment is reported which confirms the difference in escape‐avoidance conditioning between rats of the two Maudsley selected strains. This finding constitutes a second in variance in the behaviour of these strains: the first, with which it is contrasted, related to differences in conditioned emotional responses. It is suggested that the two nevertheless indicate a consistent emotional responsiveness in these strains

  • A Fully Automated Shuttle-Box for Avoidance Conditioning

    Open Access•Frederick A King, Karl Achenbach et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1961

This report describes a completely automated shuttle-box avoidance conditioning apparatus for the rat. The equipment has been designed for maximum flexibility in order that the programming changes required for both simple and highly complex conditioning procedures may be made by simply re-setting dials. For each trial four independently adjustable time intervals are available, and for each of these intratrial intervals, visual, auditory, and shoc…
