Language, Interaction and National Identity: Studies in the Social Organisation of National Identity in Talk-In-Interaction
A Sociology of Crime: Second Edition
A Sociology of Crime has an outstanding reputation for its distinctive and systematic contribution to the criminological literature. Through detailed examples and analysis, it shows how crime is a product of processes of criminalisation constituted through the interactional and organizational use of language. In this welcome second edition, the book reviews and evaluates the current state of criminological theory from this "grammatical" perspecti…

Categorial Occasionality and Transformation: Analyzing Culture in Action
Orders of Ordinary Action: Respecifying Sociological Knowledge
The theme of this book is how ethnomethodology provides for an 'alternate' sociology by respecifying sociological phenomena as locally accomplished members' activities. Much of the book comprises original research by leading scholars in the field
Conversational actions and category relations: An analysis of a children’s argument
This paper presents an analysis of conversational actions and category relations exhibited in an episode of argument between a brother and sister during a family meal. The paper is based on two sets of auspices: on a conversation analytic concern with the interconnection between the sequential and categorical ‘layers’ of organization to which parties to talk-in-interaction are demonstrably oriented, and on ‘Sacks’ Conjecture’ regarding children’s…
The Montreal Massacre: A Story of Membership Categorization Analysis
The Montreal Massacre: A Story of Membership Categorization Analysis adopts an ethnomethodological viewpoint to analyze how the murder of women by a lone gunman at the Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal was presented to the public via media publication over a two-week period in 1989. All that the public came to know and understand of the murders, the murderer, and the victims was constituted in the description and commentaries produced by the media.…
An Invitation to Ethnomethodology: Language, Society and Social Interaction
'An Invitation to Ethnomethodology' offers a new and rigorous approach to observational sociology that is grounded in ethnomethodology and conversation analysis
Analysing visually available mundane order: A walk to the supermarket
This paper analyses ethnomethodologically some aspects of visually available mundane order. We adopt a method of “self-reflective” analysis in which the analyst's own experience is reflected upon and accounted for as a methodical production. Thus the data analysed consists of a running commentary on a walk to the supermarket taken by one of the authors. With reference to this data, we discuss two main topics. The first involves the categorial org…
Le genre selon l'ethnométhodologie et l'analyse de conversation
People who talk on the telephone can, without exception, correctly be described as "male" or "female". What impact does this type of fact have on the social organisation of a telephone conversation? More specifically, what are its implications for an analysis of telephone conversations that tries to respect the analytical principles of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis? To answer these questions other, more general, questions need to be …
You're all a bunch of feminists: ” Categorization and the politics of terror in the Montreal Massacre
Reality Analysis in a Classroom Storytelling
In the first part of this paper ethnomethodology is compared with realist and social constructionist sociology, with specific reference to notions of 'reality'. In contrast with sociological concerns about the correct theorization of reality, for ethnomethodology 'reality' is approached as a members' phenomenon. Ethnomethodology seeks to investigate how concerns with the 'real' inform members' locally ordered practical action and reasoning. In th…

Doing Data: The Local Organization of a Sociological Interview
We review the ubiquitous remedial perspective evident in methodological discussions of the interview and we explicate the presuppositions of such discussions. We contrast this perspective with a view of interviews as interactional events, the organization of which is locally managed and practically accomplished. We then examine a transcript of an interview between a sociological researcher and an educational psychologist, in which psychological r…

The Social Facts of Deviance in School: A Study of Mundane Reason
This paper reports an ethnomethodological study of the use of mundane reason in relation to deviance in schools. Its central theme is that the social facts of deviance in schools are constituted through the assumptions, practices and procedures which comprise mundane reason. The data upon which the study is based consist of transcribed tape recordings of meetings between teachers, psychologists and social workers at which children referred from s…
