People who talk on the telephone can, without exception, correctly be described as "male" or "female". What impact does this type of fact have on the social organisation of a telephone conversation? More specifically, what are its implications for an analysis of telephone conversations that tries to respect the analytical principles of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis? To answer these questions other, more general, questions need to be asked first, such as: what are the implications of an ethnomethodological approach to gender in social life, and what approach to the relationship between gender and conversation is in keeping with the methodology of conversation analysis
