  • Navigating Anxiety

    Open Access•Katie Brown, Meg Loveys•ARTICLE•Open Screens•2025

According to the World Health Organization (2022), one in eight people worldwide experiences a mental health condition. For these individuals, they may experience significant challenges with thinking, emotional regulation, or behaviour. This article explores the representation of adolescent mental health conditions amongst students in two Netflix-based television shows: The Healing Powers of Dude (2020) and Sex Education (2019). The former follow…

  • Reduced prosocial motivation and effort in adolescents with conduct problems and callous‐unemotional traits

Open Access•Anne Gaule, Peter Martin et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Psychology and…•2024

BACKGROUND: Prosocial behaviours - acts that benefit others - are of crucial importance for many species including humans. However, adolescents with conduct problems (CP), unlike their typically developing (TD) peers, demonstrate markedly reduced engagement in prosocial behaviours. This pattern is particularly pronounced in adolescents with CP and high levels of callous-unemotional traits (CP/HCU) who are at increased risk of developing psychopat…

  • Imagining alternative futures with augmentative and alternative communication

    Open Access•Darryl Sellwood, Lateef McLeod et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Humanities•2024•References: 1

This manifesto seeks to challenge dominant narratives about the future of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Current predictions are mainly driven by technological developments-technologies usually being developed for different markets-and are often based on ableist assumptions. In online conversations and a discussion panel at the 2023 International Society for Augmentative and Alternative Communication conference, we explored alt…

  • Independent measurement of face perception, face matching, and face memory reveals impairments in face perception and memory, but not matching, in autism

Open Access•Mirta Stantić, Katie Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Psychonomic Bulletin & Review•2023

Multiple psychological processes are required in order for a face to be recognised from memory. However, when testing face memory using tasks such as the Cambridge Face Memory Task (CFMT), it is rare for studies to attempt to account for individual differences in face perception and face matching in order to isolate variance in face memory specifically. In Study 1, the Oxford Face Matching Test (OFMT) was used to assess face matching and face per…

  • ‘An elegant surpassing of the truth’

    Katie Brown•ARTICLE•Journal of Romance Studies•2022

Resulting from a collaboration with workers at the Jumex factory and responding to an exhibition at the Jumex art gallery, La historia de mis dientes [The Story of my Teeth] by Valeria Luiselli interrogates the ways in which stories can be used to market objects, places, and people and the values attached to the names of authors and artists. Attention to the changes made to the text in the English translation highlights these central concerns, wh…

To evaluate if experiencing a short-term exposure (18-months) to factors such as menstrual irregularities, dieting, changes in exercise or body weight, and medication usage is associated with bone mineral density (BMD) in college-aged females. A retrospective survey assessing health behaviors during a recent 18-month time period and a DXA scan were completed in 641 females. A total of 45.5% of participants reported amenorrhea during the 18-month …

  • Covid-19 and Youth Sports

Jimmy Sanderson, Kate Brown et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Sport…•2020

COVID-19 has dramatically altered and disrupted sport in unprecedented ways, and youth sports is one sector that has been profoundly impacted. In the United States, the youth sports industry generates $19 billion dollars annually, while youth sport tourism is estimated at $9 billion annually. With youth sports at a standstill, the effect on the youth sports infrastructure is significant. The purpose of this scholarly commentary was to discuss the…

  • There Can Be No Revolution without Culture

    Open Access•Katie Brown•ARTICLE•Bulletin of Latin American Research•2019•References: 12

Under Hugo Chávez's ‘Bolivarian Revolution’, the government made itself present in all stages of literary production, applying the official idea of reading and writing as ‘socialist practices’. The Bolivarian government envisaged a popular counter‐hegemony, courting popular support while delegitimising cultural elites and reinforcing class tensions. Bolivarian cultural policy is anachronistic in an age of global literary markets, while the emphas…

Objectives. To more clearly articulate, and more graphically demonstrate, the impact of poverty on various health outcomes and social conditions by comparing the poorest counties to the richest counties in the United States and to other countries in the world. Methods. We used 5-year averages for median household income to form the 3141 US counties into 50 new “states”—each representing 2% of the counties in the United States (62 or 63 counties e…

To what degree can a museum impact cultural change in a community? Drawing from an evaluation of Levine Museum of the New South's Speaking of Change program, this article – which is the outcome of a community engaged partnership between museum staff, urban social geographers, and urban education scholars – describes one museum's community practice in shaping receptivity toward newcomers in a new immigrant gateway. Specifically, we demonstrate how…

  • Intermedia Framing and Intercultural Communication

Kate Brown, Katie Brown et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Intercultural…•2012

By covering underrepresented areas in the world, Al Jazeera English (AJE) can facilitate intercultural understanding among Americans. However, AJE is not widely available on television in the United States. Further, many Americans hold pre-formed suspicions of the channel. Through an online experiment, we find that pre-reception audience bias against AJE exists and correlates with prejudice against Arab Americans, limiting its conciliatory potent…

  • Can Al Jazeera English Leverage its ‘Egypt Moment’ into an American Audience

Open Access•William Lafi Youmans, Katie Brown•ARTICLE•Arab Media and Society•2011

Al Jazeera English (AJE)1 entered the competitive global news field in late 2006, claiming to give a “voice to the voiceless” as the “world's first English language news channel to have its headquarters in the Middle East.” AJE nonetheless did not position itself as an Arab network merely broadcasting in English – a natural assumption given the prominence of its older, Arabic language sister channel. Rather, AJE declared and maintains a “global” …
