XIX. A Nepalese Vajra
The three texts deciphered below appear on a vajra, the property of Mr. G. D. Sofoulis of Shanghai, a photograph of which has been lent to the Egyptian and Oriental Society of Manchester by Mr. F. Evans. According to the description received the vajra is 37 inches long and from 13⁄4 to 2 inches wide. It weighs about 5 lb. The blade is made of steel, which is 281⁄2 inches long and is pointed and sharpened on both sides. The inscriptions and the ha…

XI. Documents Sanscrits de la Seconde Collection M. A. Stein
MS. sur papier; slanting brāhmī ; 12 folios. Voir JRAS. 1911, p. 762.

VI. Buddhist Notes
There is much to support the opinion of Rāmānuja, Dr. Thibaut, and many others, that Śaṃkara's doctrine of “illusion” is a biassed rendering of the old Vedānta, Bādarāyaṇik as well as Aupanishadic. If that be granted, it is by no means self-evident that Buddhism has been without influence on Śamkara's speculation; and the last writer on the subject, Vasudev Anant Sukhtankar, a very able pupil of Professor Jacobi, does not conceal his opinion, or …
XI. Buddhist Notes. The “Five Points” of Mahadeva and the Kathavatthu
WHILE preparing an article on Buddhist Councils for Hastings' Encyclopaedia of Religion and Ethics , I came to identify the so-called “Five Points” of Mahādeva with some “heretical” tenets of the Kathāvatthu. If I am right in this identification, and I believe I am, the fact cannot be without importance, for it establishes a link, hitherto wanting, between the Cingalese tradition of the Third Council and the Northern traditions concerning council…
IV. MSS. Cecil Bendall II.
XXXI. Studies in Buddhist Dogma. The Three Bodies of a Buddha ( Trikāya )
One of the more interesting features of the Great Vehicle, or Mahāyāna School of Buddhism, is the system of the Three Bodies. Being at first a ‘ Buddhology,’ a speculative doctrine of the Buddhahood, this system was afterwards made to cover the whole field of dogmatic, of ontology, and was in particular substituted for the antiquated ‘ dependent origination’ (pratītyasamutpāda). At first the Buddhas alone had three ‘ Bodies’ ; afterwards the whol…

Art. XI.—Maṇicūḍāvadāna, as related in the fourth chapter of the Svayambhūpurāṇa [Paris, dev. 78]
The Svayambhūpurāṇa [Paris, dev. 78] is probably a literary recast of the Svayambhūpurāṇa named by copyists Vṛhat ̊ and Mahāsvayambhūpurāṇa, and existing in many copies in the Paris, Cambridge, and London (A. S.) Libraries, and also in India. The topics of this work are identical, but the language is, to some extent, different, and the treatment of the matter fairly independent. The same can be said, so far as I am acquainted with the facts, abou…

Art. XVII.—The Buddhist “Wheel of Life” from a New Source
The doctrine of the Pratītyasamutpāda is expounded at considerable length in the sixteenth chapter of the Caṇḍamahā-roṣaṇa-tantra (MSS. of the Royal Asiatic Society, the Société Asiatique, and Cambridge). As is well known, the doctrine expressed in this very difficult formula forms one of the details of Buddhist doctrine regarded by the early Buddhists themselves as of primary importance; and its meaning has been frequently discussed. Mr. Waddell…
