  • Tracing the imperial roots of cassava in Mozambique

    Open Access•Eugenia Rodrigues•ARTICLE•Historia Agraria Revista de…•2024•References: 16

Drawing upon qualitative analyses of Portuguese sources, this article explores the cassava trajectory in modern-day Mozambique between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries within the framework of the trans-imperial networks in the Indian Ocean World. It begins by addressing the possible routes of introducing the plant across Mozambique’s territory and the colonial policies aimed at making its cultivation mandatory. It demonstrates how this process…

  • History of Mozambique

    Eugenia Rodrigues•CHAPTER•Oxford Research Encyclopedia of…•2019

The peoples of early-21st-century Mozambique underwent different historical experiences which, to a certain extent, were homogenized when Portuguese colonialism encompassed the entire territory from the late 19th century onward. However, all of them had common origins, rooted in successive Bantu migrations. These peoples were organized into small chiefdoms based on lineages, but those located in the central region of Mozambique were integrated in…

  • On SSK and Conversing with Scientists

Open Access•Eugenia Rodrigues, Eugênia Maria Silveira Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•Engaging Science Technology and…•2018

Mike Mulkay takes Eugénia Rodrigues through a journey that revisits his involvement in the Sociology of Scientific Knowledge and STS. They talk dates, career moves, foundational work, books, and how it all started with a denied visa application from the US. Running under this formalistic level, though, other themes emerge: the notion of a “field” and its meaning in STS; the observed lack of epistemological and methodological rigor in research pra…

  • Policies, politics and organisational problems

    Christina Boswell, Eugenia Rodrigues et al.•ARTICLE•Policy & Politics•2016•Cited by: 18•References: 17

Kingdon’s multiple streams approach has recently been applied to study implementation across sectors or levels of government. Building on these contributions, we suggest that two streams are especially important in shaping implementation: organisational problem constructions and political pressure from the centre. These variables produce a four-way typology of implementation modes. We test the model by analysing implementation of UK targets on as…

  • African Women’s Access and Rights to Property in the Portuguese Empire

    M P Candido, Mariana Candido et al.•ARTICLE•African Economic History•2015•Cited by: 1•References: 46

The study of African women’s access and rights to property in the Portuguese empire allows us to historicize African women’s experience with wealth and poverty. Since the 1960s, studies have brought attention to the reality that poverty in Africa affects women more profoundly than it does men.[1

  • Women, Land, and Power in the Zambezi Valley of the Eighteenth Century

    Eugenia Rodrigues•ARTICLE•African Economic History•2015•Cited by: 3•References: 28

This article examines the issue of gender, landed property, and power in the Zambezi Valley, in modern Mozambique, during the eighteenth century. In the context of the Portuguese empire, mixed-race women had access to land, often vast territories, through inheritance practices and grants from the Portuguese crown. The possession of landed states enabled them to acquire jurisdiction over local populations. Mobilizing kinship and social networks, t…

  • Property Rights, Land and Territory in the European Overseas Empires

Maria Leonor Garcia Da Cruz, José Vicente Serrão et al.•BOOK•Property Rights, Land and…•2014

This study focuses on the complex and changeable legal status of the lands granted in 1552 to D. António de Ataíde, first earl of Castanheira, in the royal captaincy of Bahia, Brazil. Having been granted as sesmarias, these lands and their territory were converted into a private and hereditary captaincy in 1556, being also bonded to an entailed estate already existing in Portugal since the 1520s. Thus, while the whole set of assets, rents, rights…

  • Eating and Drinking at the Royal Hospital of Mozambique Island

    Open Access•Eugenia Rodrigues•ARTICLE•Afriques•2014•References: 13

This article analyses the social construction of the hospital diet in Mozambique Island and the process of dietary change induced by the European medical discourse and extended to the East African colonial world, at the end of the Ancien Régime. Mozambique Island, former capital of the Portuguese East Africa colony, was the crossing point of people from various continents, where culinary traditions sometimes mingled together and sometimes coexist…

    Open Access•Eugenia Rodrigues, Maria Eugênia Rodrigues•ARTICLE•História Questões & Debates•2006•Cited by: 4
