Tourism, growth, cohesion and competitiveness: Effects in Portugal’s regions and low-density territories
This study examines the impact of tourism on regional development in Portugal from 2012 to 2019, focusing on NUTS-III regions to reduce aggregation bias and capture intra-regional disparities. Particular attention is given to Low-Density Territories (LDTs), marked by demographic fragility and structural disadvantages. Using multidimensional indices of Cohesion and Competitiveness and Spatial Durbin Models with spatial fixed effects, the analysis …
Digitalising wine and wine tourism experiences: A diffusion of innovations approach across nations
Selecting a cross-national approach and embracing the diffusion of innovations framework, this study investigates digitalisation in the context of the winery experience, thereby responding to calls for further research in this area. Specifically, the types of digital tools used, the approximate time of usage, the perceived benefits of ‘digitalising the winery’, how digitalisation can contribute to ‘consuming the winery’, and digitalisation in the…
Sustainable wine and food products as precursors of sustainable wine tourism: A qualitative cross-national analysis
This study sheds light on how sustainable wine and food production can influence the wine tourism experience, drawing on the insights from winery owners and managers. Semi-structured, open-ended, face-to-face, and online interviews were conducted with participants in eight different nations. The analysis uncovered multiple conceptual dimensions that help explain sustainability in the above domains. Among others, the wine production antecedents an…
The effect of virtual proximity and digital adoption on international tourism flows to Southern Europe
This paper extends the traditional gravity model to explain the effect of digitalization on international tourism flows to five Southern European countries, where tourism plays an important economic role. The analysis is based on balanced panel data covering the period 2004–2019. Internet-user statistics and Google Trends search data are used as a proxy for digital adoption and virtual proximity, respectively, by source markets. Results lend supp…
Rural tourism recovery between two Covid-19 waves: The case of Portugal
During the summer of 2020 intra-national mobility restrictions were lifted in most European countries, and domestic tourism partially cushioned the negative impacts of plunging international arrivals. Considering the perceived risk of crowding, low tourist density destinations were expected to benefit from shifts in tourists’ preferences. This paper shows that, in the case of Portugal, preference for tourism in rural areas increased substantially…
Rural tourism in Portugal: Moving to the countryside
The maps produced in this article allow an extended interpretation of rural tourism’s development in mainland Portugal by identifying spatio-temporal patterns, relationships, and connections. This is accomplished through the superimposition of multiple thematic layers and kernel density analysis to potentially predict rural tourism’s ruralisation patterns. The maps demonstrate that the development of rural tourism in Portugal observed a centrifug…
