  • Objectivity Discourse, the Protestant Secular, and the Decolonization of Religious Studies

    Travis Warren Cooper•ARTICLE•Method & Theory in the Study of…•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 11

This article documents a complex genealogy of objectivity discourse that has shaped the study of religion in the modern academy. Analyzing data derived from a 2015 survey administered to Big 10, Research 1, and Ivy League religious studies institutions in the United States, the study posits a provisional taxonomy of neutrality language. The debates about positionality and self-disclosure in religion classrooms, as explored in the taxonomy, is evi…

  • A Discursive Analysis of a Century of Anthropological Writings on Missionary Ethnographers

    Open Access•Travis Warren Cooper•ARTICLE•Religion and Society•2018•References: 27

This article examines discussions of missionaries penned by anthropologists and existing in disciplinary consciousness. Questions of alterity, distance and sameness, the potentially exploitative effects of ethnography, and the uncomfortable colonialist underpinnings of both missionary and anthropological pasts come to the fore in these texts. Drawing on a wealth of journal articles, ethnographic monographs, and edited volumes, I identify, describ…

Drawing somewhat anachronistically on Smith's taxonomic model, I argue that underlying investigative categories posed by structural anthropologists are operative strategies of subjective value and valuation. I employ Sm…

    Open Access•Travis Warren Cooper•ARTICLE•Journal for the Scientific Study…•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Extending social anthropologist Mary Douglas's theory of purity and danger, this article employs a form of textual and discourse analysis and draws on subcultural identity theory. The article argues that one central aspect of social formation occurs through definitional battles or arguments situating theological boundaries and setting the socioreligious parameters of an inchoate group. The Emerging Church Movement (ECM) offers a clear example of …

  • Cooking with Gordon’

    Open Access•Travis Warren Cooper•ARTICLE•Religion and Gender•2013

This article examines evangelical gender paradigms as expressed through a 700 Club cooking segment facilitated by Gordon Robertson, the son of Pat Robertson – founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN), The 700 Club , Christian Coalition, and one-time presidential candidate. Several themes converge within this cooking show, including health and nutrition, family ritual, and gender roles. Using the cooking segment as data, I draw on schol…
