  • Genetic Variation and Population Structure in Native Americans

    Open Access•Sijia Wang, Cecil M Lewis et al.•ARTICLE•PLoS Genetics•2007

We examined genetic diversity and population structure in the American landmass using 678 autosomal microsatellite markers genotyped in 422 individuals representing 24 Native American populations sampled from North, Central, and South America. These data were analyzed jointly with similar data available in 54 other indigenous populations worldwide, including an additional five Native American groups. The Native American populations have lower gen…

  • Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type II in Guaraní Indians, Southern Brazil

    Open Access•Marcio Menna-Barreto, Ana Ligia Bender et al.•ARTICLE•Cadernos de Saude Publica•2005•Cited by: 1•References: 23

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type II (HTLV-II) is found in many New World Indian groups on the American continent. In Brazil, HTLV-II has been found among urban residents and Indians in the Amazon region, in the North. Guaraní Indians in the South of Brazil were studied for HTLV-I/II infection. Among 52 individuals, three (5.76%) showed positive anti-HTLV-II antibodies (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot). This preliminary repo…

  • Demographic and Genetic Structures of Two Partially Isolated Communities of Santa Catarina Island, Southern Brazil

Iliada Rainha De Souza, Yara Costa Netto Muniz et al.•ARTICLE•Human Biology•2003•Cited by: 2

The objectives of this study were to analyze the population structure and genetic variability of two communities, Costa da Lagoa (CLG) and São João do Rio Vermelho (SJRV), located on Santa Catarina Island in southern Brazil. The two populations descend from Azores Archipelago immigrants (Portuguese), with a minor contribution of sub-Saharan Africans and Amerindians. To estimate the relative contribution of the different ethnic groups to the curre…

This study investigated the autoantibody profile of 241 blood samples from 176 Kaingang and 65 Guarani Indians from three populations living on the Rio das Cobras and Ivaí reservations, in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. The presence of antimitochondrial, anti-smooth muscle, antinuclear, anti-parietal cell, and anti-liver-kidney microsome antibodies was determined by indirect immunofluorescence. These results were compared with samples f…
