    Open Access•Damaris Rose•ARTICLE•Journal of European Social Policy•2018•Cited by: 4•References: 7

Asking whether social policies can alter the experience of unemployment, this article systematically evaluates whether participation in active labour market policies (ALMPs) influences the well-being of the unemployed. With consistently high unemployment rates in Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, scholars have started to examine the impact of ALMP schemes on a variety of tangible economic outcomes, but place…

  • Lives of their own, a place of their own? The living arrangements of ‘business girls’ in early twentieth-century Canadian cities

Damaris Rose, Lisa Dillon et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Canadian Studies•2016•References: 6

The rise of living alone since the 1960s and women’s diversifying employment opportunities are signifiers of an accelerated individualisation of lives, with marked repercussions for urban housing markets. Yet early twentieth-century youth married later than baby boomers, and metropolitan urbanisation, combined with cultural and technological modernisation post-First World War, helped entrench single women in white-collar employment and legitimise…

  • Social Mix' and Neighbourhood Revitalization in a Transatlantic Perspective: Comparing Local Policy Discourses and Expectations in Paris (France), Bristol (UK) and Montréal (Canada)

Open Access•Damaris Rose, Annick Germain et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2013•Cited by: 21•References: 41

The longstanding debate around the merits of promoting social class mix in urban neighbourhoods has taken a new twist in recent times. A transatlantic and neoliberal convergence of policy advice, supported by the 'neighbourhood effects' thesis, makes a case for addressing deep poverty by spatially deconcentrating it, inter alia, by gentrification. While developing trenchant critiques of this approach, critical urban scholarship has tended to take…

  • Revisiting the Role of Neighbourhood Change in Social Exclusion and Inclusion of Older People

    Open Access•Victoria F Burns, Jean-Pierre Lavoie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging Research•2012

Objective . To explore how older people who are “aging in place” are affected when the urban neighbourhoods in which they are aging are themselves undergoing socioeconomic and demographic change. Methods . A qualitative case study was conducted in two contrasting neighbourhoods in Montréal (Québec, Canada), the analysis drawing on concepts of social exclusion and attachment. Results . Participants express variable levels of attachment to neighbou…

    Jean-Pierre Lavoie, Jean‐pierre Lavoie et al.•ARTICLE•Diversité urbaine•2012•Cited by: 3•References: 6

    Liz Bondi, Damaris Rose•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2003

This essay explores the changing shape of Anglo-American feminist urban geography, through a discussion of material published in Gender, Place and Culture and elsewhere over the past decade. We contextualize this discussion in relation to the development of feminist urban studies since the 1970s, showing its enduring commitment to work across traditional analytical divides that obfuscate crucial aspects of the mutual constitution of gender and th…

This paper attempts to convey a sense of the increasing importance of the population question for the future of Canada and its social geographies. This future will be shaped as much by changes in population processes and living conditions as by economic and political factors. Specifically, four transformations are rippling through the country's social fabric and urban landscapes: slow growth and the demographic transition modifications to family …

    Open Access•Damaris Rose, Marc Villemaire•ARTICLE•Canadian Geographies /…•1997•Cited by: 8•References: 10

This article offers an historical‐geographical account of how an aging newsprint mill located in Gatineau, in the Outaouais region of western Québec, with serious obstacles to cost‐effective production, came to be chosen for a complete in situ technological reorganization project in the early 1990s. This apparent paradox is explained by locating the mill with respect to the production system and corporate strategy of its parent company, with resp…

  • Gender and the Separation of Employment From Home in Metropolitan Montreal, 1971–1981

    Paul Villeneuve, Damaris Rose•ARTICLE•Urban Geography•1988•Cited by: 20•References: 4

Journey-to-work studies have repeatedly found that women have shorter work trips than do men. We argue here that this finding can be interpreted in terms of the evolving relationship between (1) the gender division of labor in household production and (2) the position of women in the labor market. We analyze changes in home-to-employment distances in Montreal between 1971 and 1981 and find that, although gender differences in these distances vary…
