The Movements of Working Children and the International Labour Organization. A Lesson on Enforced Silence
Relations between the International Labour Organization ( ILO ) and grassroots movements of working children are characterised by tensions. Working children's claim to participate in conceptualising child labour policy is increasingly rejected. Most recently, in November 2017, the Latin American Movement of Working Children and Adolescents ( MOLACNAT s) lodged a complaint with the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child over violations of rights …

This article describes the findings of two qualitative researches carried out with working children and their families in Lima (Peru) and the Algarve (Portugal). They focus on the socialisation of the working child, related to the experience and skills gained through work, as well as the socio-economic strategies which provide the context of that learning process.Analysis shows that work might be a space in which the child gains important skills …
Perspectives on children’s work in the Algarve (Portugal) and their implications for social policy
After discussion of existing literature on children’s work in Portugal, the article presents findings from research carried out in the southern region of that country on social policy relating to child labour. Examination of children’s and parents’ views on children’s work suggests that the main discourse on child labour and the international policies it promotes are far from taking their complex realities into account. Problems that relate to po…
Street-Working Children and Adolescents in Lima: Work as an Agent of Socialization
This article presents an analysis of children's work as part of their socialization process. Ethnographic material was collected in Lima (Peru) with street-working girls and boys as well as their parents. The text examines three questions: the diverse concepts of work, family and childhood; adult representations and norms that they pass on or aim to transmit to children through work; and the child's point of view regarding his or her work and the…
Street working children in lima: The child's ‘Surcharge’ between survival strategies and socialisation
Child labour is usually analysed within the framework of exploitation. This essay is an attempt to analyse children's economic activities in the street using the concept ‘surcharge”, which may be defined as a child's negative experience of overload or over work. In the comparison between dissatisfactory and satisfactory working conditions, it has been argued that the first is linked not only to a lack of protection, but also to a lack of autonomy…
