The Lost Boys of Sudan: Coping with ambiguous loss and separation from parents
The Lost Boys of Sudan were separated from their families by civil war and subsequently lived in three other countries-Ethiopia, Kenya, and the United States. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 refugees about their experiences of separation from parents and ambiguous loss, and the coping strategies the youth used when they did not know if other members of their family were dead or alive. All of the youth reported using both emotion-focuse…
Risk and promotive factors related to depressive symptoms among Japanese youth
Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, loneliness, suicidal ideation, and self-dislike. Adolescent depression is viewed as a problem in Japan, but there is little research on the correlates of depression in Japanese youth. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of depression in Japanese youth and to examine correlates of depression using a risk and promotive factor framework. This study examined the sy…

Factors Related to Social Competence in Elementary School Among Children of Adolescent Mothers
This study examined factors related to social competence in first grade among children of low‐income, adolescent mothers. The sample included 83 mother–child dyads who had participated in a family support program for adolescent mothers. Characteristics of the child, mother, and the child's living context were examined for their relationship to children's social skills and problem behaviors. Several factors had significant bivariate relationships …
Protective Factors, Physical Abuse, and Purging from Community-Wide Surveys of Female Adolescents
This study explores resiliency in adolescent females who reported being physically abused. Employing data from the Search Institute on more than 100,000 adolescent females, this study addressed the following questions: Is a history of physical abuse associated with purging two or more times per week by female adolescents? What factors are associated with a decreased risk of purging among adolescent females who have a history of physical abuse? In…
Factors Related to Early Subsequent Pregnancies and Second Births among Adolescent Mothers in a Family Support Program
This study addressed the following questions: Did adolescent mother who were randomly assigned to receive more intensive family support services have lower rates of early subsequent pregnancies and second births than adolescent mothers who received less intensive services? What factors assessed early in the program were predictive of which adolescents ( N = 99) had subsequent pregnancies or second births by the time the firstborn child was 24 mon…

Correlates of Male Adolescents Carrying Handguns Among Their Peers
Data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997 were used to examine factors associated with carrying a handgun among adolescent males. We expected that carrying a handgun would be associated with characteristics of the individual and with aspects of the contexts that are important for adolescents, such as the family, the peer group, the school setting, and the neighborhood. Consistent with these expectations, we found that adolescent ma…
Factors Related to Successful Outcomes Among Preschool Children Born to Low-Income Adolescent Mothers
The purpose of this study was to describe how the experiences and circumstances of the most successful children born to low-income adolescent mothers differed from the experiences and circumstances of the least successful children over the first 54 months of their lives. Success was defined as scoring in the top quartile for this sample on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R) when the children were 54 months old and about to make …
Caregiving by low‐income adolescent mothers and the language abilities of their 30‐month‐old children
The primary question of interest in this study was: Are the caregiving practices of low-income, teenage mothers during the first 2 years of their children's lives predictive of individual differences in the language abilities of their 30-month-old children? This question was addressed with a sample of 76 teenage mothers and their children who were participating in a family support program. Various measures of caregiving behavior, assessed when th…
