Multi-Objective Neural Architecture Search for Cognitive Diagnosis
Cognitive diagnosis (CD) is a fundamental task within computational social systems, essential for personalizing learning in intelligent education by assessing a learner’s fine-grained knowledge proficiency. A critical dilemma exists in designing cognitive diagnosis models (CDMs): conventional psychometric models are interpretable but often simplistic, while complex deep learning models achieve high accuracy at the cost of becoming uninterpretable…

Uncovering nonlinear urban factors of homelessness
Urban homelessness is a complex issue rooted in structural inequalities and spatial disparities, significantly affecting urban life and well-being. Existing research often relies on survey-based or linear regression methods, which are limited in scope, coverage, and their ability to capture nonlinear associations. This study addresses these gaps by combining homeless incident reports from New York City’s 311 service with multi-source urban big da…

Mountaineering has evolved into mainstream forms of sports tourism, embraced by Generation Z, who seek meaningful experiences, self-expression, and social connection. This study examines the factors influencing the recreation specialisation intentions of Generation Z mountaineers. Guided by self-determination theory, a mixed-methods design was employed. Semi-structured interviews with 9 participants identified six motivational drivers: relatednes…
Neurophysiological assessment of restorative benefits in forest-rural landscapes
With the increasing prominence of mental health issues among humans, the restorative benefits of natural environments have garnered widespread attention. As a typical high-restorative living environment, the forest village plays a significant role in generating positive restorative effects. Previous studies have mainly explored the simple correlations between environmental characteristics and psychological or physiological indicators, while the d…

Getting Dynamic Implementation to Work
We develop a new class of two-stage mechanisms, which fully implement any social choice function under initial rationalizability in complete information environments. We show theoretically that our simultaneous report (SR) mechanisms are robust to small amounts of incomplete information about the state of nature. We also highlight the robustness of the mechanisms to a wide variety of reasoning processes and behavioral assumptions. We show experim…
Technology Spillover
Technology spillover refers to the unintentional technological benefits to firms that come from the research and development efforts of other firms without the costs being shared. Technology spillover is expected to be particularly strong from leading firms coming from advanced economies to firms in emerging economies. Successful technology spillovers depend on the absorptive capability of the receiving firms as well as the technological gap betw…
Innovation and inter-firm technological networking
This study examines the relationships between inter-firm networking and innovation within industrial clusters in a developing context. Based on a unique dataset that was collected through a large-scale survey with firms in China's information communication technology (ICT) industry, this study systematically scrutinizes the benefits of linkages with foreign and domestic firms for innovativeness of Chinese firms. Our analyses have revealed a numbe…
Placing Technological Innovation in Globalising China
This study critically examines the relevance of the perceived notions of localised production linkages, knowledge spillover and external technology transfer to the experiences of the growth of the ICT industry in China. The research is based on a major firm-level survey conducted in China’s three most important mega urban regions—Beijing, Shanghai-Suzhou and Shenzhen-Dongguan—where the bulk of the Chinese ICT industry is located. The results of t…

Sun Y., Zhou Y., Lin G. C. S. and Wei Y. H. D. Subcontracting and supplier innovativeness in a developing economy: evidence from China's information and communication technology industry, Regional Studies. This study critically evaluates the relevance of the global value chains theory against the actual practices of subcontracting and technological innovation in China based on a large-scale empirical firm survey in the information and communicati…
Domestic Firm Innovation and Networking with Foreign Firms in China's ICT Industry
This study systematically analyzes the impacts of supplier-client and technological linkages with foreign firms on domestic firm technological innovation, based on a unique dataset that was collected through a survey of over 600 firms in China's information and communication technology industry. The results revealed that Chinese firms were engaged in extensive supplier-client relationships with foreign firms, although their technological collabor…
De-centering 'spatial fix'--patterns of territorialization and regional technological dynamism of ICT hubs in China
This article critically assesses Harvey's 'spatial fix' thesis through systematically comparing the spatial patterns and dynamics of three key regions of China's information and communication industry. The divergent territorialization is analyzed by broadening the concepts of global pipelines and local buzz to the context of developing countries. The research is based on a large-scale survey conducted in 2006-2007 in three mega-city regions of Ch…

Does Innovation Matter for Export in China's Rural Enterprises? Empirical Evidences From Jiangsu
This study examines the relationship between technological innovation and export, using data obtained through surveys of enterprises in three counties of Jiangsu, China. It reveals that most rural enterprises in Jiangsu are oriented toward China's domestic market and there exists significant geographic difference regarding export probability and intensity. It also finds that most rural enterprises are not very innovative measured by multiple indi…

Strategic or Tactical? Foreign Research and Development in Developing Countries, a Case Study of China
This study offers a new framework of classifying research and development (R&D) at multinational corporations (MNCs): strategic vs. tactical. Strategic R&D facilities are serving not only domestic markets, but also the global markets; they are involved not only in development, but also in original research; they are working not only on short-term projects, but also on projects that are crucial for MNCs' future in the long-term. Mainstream theorie…
Geographic patterns of industrial innovation in China during the 1990s
This study uses a variety of indicators such as patent grants, new product sales and R&D spending to examine the spatial patterns of industrial innovation in China during the 1990s. It is found that industrial innovation in China has been concentrated in the coastal areas, and the spatial concentration has been increasing in the 1990s, which is contrary to what Sun (2000) found on the patterns of all patent applications in 1985 to 1995. The study…
China's National Innovation System in Transition
Through a brief examination of China's science and technology history since the 1950s, this study suggests that the role of state is crucial for understanding the development, restructuring, and performance of China's innovation system. It traces the evolution of that system from a centrally controlled, segregated system geared toward weapons development during China's pre-reform period into one (since the early 1980s) oriented increasingly towar…
Sources of Innovation in China's Manufacturing Sector
The author investigates the innovative behavior of large and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises in China. It is revealed that in-house research and development (R&D) efforts, rather than imported technologies, are the primary sources of industrial innovation in China. Regarding in-house R&D efforts, it is found that in-house R&D laboratories are important sources for the creation of new products as measured by patents, though it is enterprise…
Spatial Distribution of Patents in China
SUN Y. (2000) Spatial distribution of patents in China, Reg. Studies 34 , 441-454. It is found that patents in China are highly clustered in two groups of provinces: one is the economically fast growing coastal provinces; and the other is inland provinces with large bases of populations, while the degree of spatial concentration of patents is declining over time. It is also revealed that export, together with 'technical infrastructure' including …
