  • Mental health and macroeconomics

Open Access•Anderson Argothy, Daniel Ortiz et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2026

Background: Suicidal ideation and its most extreme outcome are important issues that should be studied from different theoretical approaches. Traditionally, it has been approached from the perspective of psychology; however, this study proposes an approach from the perspective of economics. The main objective of this study is to explain the effect and causality of economic and social determinants of suicide in Ecuador. Methods: The data for this …

  • Absurd geographies of resilience and justice

Open Access•Kevin Grove, Geneviève Reid et al.•ARTICLE•Climate and Development•2024

This paper problematizes how scholars understand the relation between resilience and justice. Critical and applied scholarship tends to dismiss resilience as a neoliberal barrier to justice, or assume it necessarily advances justice outcomes. Instead, drawing on collaborative fieldwork with Miami-based social and climate justice organizers, we explore how resilience is mobilized in contextually-specific struggles against racialized vulnerability …

  • Depression and Suicide Ideation

    Open Access•Jeneve R Brooks, Ijeoma J Madubata et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2021

Suicide is a leading cause of death for Black young adults. Though depression is commonly linked to increased risk for suicide, empirical literature examining the depression–suicide association and intrinsic buffers for this association remains limited among Black young adults. This study sought to address this gap in the literature by examining the relationship between depression and suicide ideation among Black young adults. Importantly, this s…

  • A multimethod approach for cross-cultural training in an internal medicine residency program

    Open Access•Lisa J Staton, Carlos A Estrada et al.•ARTICLE•Medical Education Online•2013

  • Rocks, Bottles, and Weak Autocracies

    David Ortiz•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2013•Cited by: 7•References: 45

Scholars have recently begun to explore more nuanced ways of looking at the links between protest and repression, including consideration of the regime and other structural impacts on this dynamic relationship. This work contributes to this growing literature by employing Cox proportional hazards models to analyze daily data from 98 countries to study the exchanges between violent and nonviolent contention and repression under different regime se…

  • Confronting Oppression with Violence

    David Ortiz•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2007•Cited by: 16•References: 42

This study examines the relationships between collective violence, economic inequality, and repression. Some researchers propose that collective violence results from economic deprivation, while others emphasize the role of repression in producing violence. This study uses polynomial equations to analyze these relationships on 52 countries. Results suggest that collective violence varies as a cubic non-monotonic "N" shaped function of repression,…

  • Where Do We Stand with Newspaper Data

    David Ortiz, Daniel J Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2005•Cited by: 124•References: 30

We review the literature that identifies selection bias in media-based data and propose a theoretical model of the sources of these biases. Given the implications for validity and reliability, we conclude that newspaper data often do not reach acceptable standards for event analysis and that using them can distort findings and misguide theorizing. Furthermore, media selection biases are resistant to correction procedures largely because they are …
