Going the Extra Mile: Disclosure, Accommodation, and Stigma Management among Working Women with Disabilities
Although research has quantitatively evaluated the impacts of stigma on working women with disabilities (WWD), nuanced, qualitative accounts voiced by these women are rare. To address this literature gap, we conducted seven focus groups with forty-two WWD. We asked: "What are women's experiences of disability disclosure and accommodation in the workplace?" Findings reveal that WWD face intentional and unintentional structural discrimination and m…
The Christmas Tree of the Alsatians and Lorrainers”
This article underlines the significance of emotions in shaping political culture by analyzing a largely forgotten spectacle, the “Christmas Tree of the Alsatians and Lorrainers.” Held annually in Paris from 1872 until 1918, the event aided children whose families had fled Alsace and Lorraine to retain French citizenship following France's defeat in the Franco-Prussian War. It also provided an afternoon's entertainment for a paying audience. The …
My God! Why Was I Born: Illegitimacy, Emotion, and Family in Nineteenth-century France
Unpublished documents by Léon Laurent-Pichat (1823–1886), republican activist and Life Senator, record his experience of being born illegitimate, finding his mother in adulthood, and becoming part of her family. Such accounts are extremely rare. This case study uses those writings to elucidate the emotional impact of illegitimacy on both child and family. It also questions how far the legal and social exclusion of illegitimate children from the c…

Becoming a Woman: Self-fashioning and emotion in a nineteenth-century family correspondence
This article explores the self-fashioning of a bourgeois woman in nineteenth-century France by analysing Geneviève Laurent-Pichat's letters to her father. Geneviève's illegitimacy compounded the emotional difficulties of her path to womanhood, but it also illuminates the processes by which bourgeois girls learned emotional self-management and shaped a self that fitted their assigned social position. Geneviève's letters also enable a reassessment …

Doing Disability: Disability Formations in the Search for Work
Disability theorists have spent much time discussing howdisabilityis defined. The theoretical roots for these debates reside in the medical, structural, and minority models of disability. The medical model views disability as equivalent to a functional impairment; the minority model sees a lack of equal rights as a primary impediment to social equality between able and disabled populations; and the structural model looks to environmental factors …

Focus Groups and Methodological Reflections: Conscientious Flexibility in the Field
This article discusses the methodological issues and pragmatic dilemmas confronted by a group of researchers conducting focus groups composed of people with disabilities. As an initial component of a mixed-method, longitudinal research project, the intention was to gather perceptions of the ways in which recent policy initiatives shape the lives and employment experiences of people with disabilities. We present the methodological design issues we…
Medicaid and Employment of People With Disabilities: Findings From the National Survey of State Systems and Employment for People with Disabilities
Recent public policy has sought to broaden the role of Medicaid, which typically serves people with limited income, to include increasing employment among people with disabilities and supporting people with disabilities who are working. In late 2001, we surveyed Medicaid agencies regarding their provision of services to working people with disabilities and collaboration with disability- and employment-related agencies and services. One third to o…
State-Level Interagency Agreements for Supported Employment of People With Disabilities
Supported employment for people with disabilities has been a national policy since the late 1980s. Because its implementation usually requires the resources of at least 2 funding and service state agencies, written interagency agreements have been a formal strategy for policy implementation. This qualitative study analyzes interagency agreements for supported employment and the resulting collaborations of 6 states to identify the crucial characte…
In search of 'liberty: Politics and women's rights in the travel narratives of Flora Tristan and Suzanne Voilquin
The travel writings of Flora Tristan and Suzanne Voilquin are relatively unusual for their time in that their authors were feminists and socialists, and devoted particular attention to political questions in the societies they visited. But having criticised France's failure to extend rights to women, they nevertheless emphasised French cultural and political superiority, and recommended its ‘Enlightened’ model of womanhood to other societies. The…
The Path to Employment for Individuals with Disabilities in the Welfare System
Welfare reform has changed the landscape of social protection for individuals on the margins of economic independence. Reforms require individuals to develop marketable skills and acceptable work behaviors and to move along a path to employment. For individuals with disabilities in the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) system, substantial barriers and insufficient transitional supports can impede this path. The current study examined…
