  • Higher Education for Haredim in Israel

Open Access•Tova Hartman, Chaim Zicherman•ARTICLE•Journal of Law and Religion•2019

Over the past two decades a number of Israeli institutions of higher education have opened gender-segregated programs for the ultra-Orthodox, or haredim. The growth of these programs has generated an intense debate in Israel, reflected throughout Israeli media and in several appeals to Israel's Supreme Court. The issues raised concerning gender-segregated higher education reflect an overarching inquiry that is of great interest to multicultural t…

  • Minority stress in an improved social environment: Lesbian mothers and the burden of proof

Alona Peleg, Tova Hartman•ARTICLE•Journal of GLBT Family Studies•2019

Minority stress describes the particular stress to which sexual and gender minorities are exposed, due to homophobia and heterosexism. The current study explores whether or not lesbian mothers still experience minority stress in a relatively accepting and inclusive community. Forty women living in planned lesbian families in Tel Aviv were interviewed. An analysis of their narratives indicates that these women struggle with an additional stress fa…

  • Staying and Critiquing

Valeria Seigelsheifer, Tova Hartman•ARTICLE•Israeli Studies Review•2019

Over the past two decades, Israeli Orthodox Jewish women filmmakers have used film to speak in a public voice about various subjects that were previously taboo. Although there are aspects of Orthodoxy to which these filmmakers object, they do so as ‘devoted resisters’. Rather than expressing heretical opposition, the women stay committed to Orthodoxy precisely because they are able to use filmmaking to resist. In their negotiations of voice used …

  • Men, masculinity, and breakups: Resisting the tyranny of “moving on”

    Open Access•Tova Hartman•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2017

This article examines heterosexual men's experience of negotiating through hegemonic masculinity after a partner‐initiated breakup. The men in the study learned to navigate the relational demands of the norms of masculinity in a variety of ways, using strategies along a spectrum between resistance and accommodation. Many of the men described their breakup in terms not merely of one psychological trauma but of two: the acute personal psychic and e…

  • Strong multiplicity: An Interpretive Lens in the Analysis of Qualitative Interview Narratives

    Open Access•Tova Hartman•ARTICLE•Qualitative Research•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 24

This article examines the responses to an exercise administered over a 10-year period to graduate-level psychology students in an advanced methodology seminar, to explore one of the central questions of qualitative research: What theories about identity do we bring to our analyses of first-person interview narratives? It suggests that researchers' interpretations of what appear to be inconsistent and/or conflicting statements by interview subject…

For this study of sexual education in Israeli Modern Orthodox high schools, we interviewed teachers at the crossroads of conflicting values. Caught between a commitment to promote traditional practices and values, and a sense of obligation to serve as caregivers to students whose lived realities often do not fit neatly within the framework of religious norms, these teachers experienced acute confusion regarding their roles and even identities as …

  • Lived Regulations, Systemic Attributions: Menstrual Separation and Ritual Immersion in the Experience of Orthodox Jewish Women

    Open Access•Tova Hartman, Naomi Marmon•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2004•Cited by: 7•References: 12

The rules that govern Jewish Orthodox women's bodies, in particular those of ritual purity and immersion, are often criticized as patriarchal and an expression of oppression or domination. This study challenges the structuralist analysis of the regimen of ritual purity by examining how religious women themselves live and experience this system. The authors interviewed 30 Orthodox Jewish women living in Israel who observe these rituals in an effor…
