Fostering teacher agency
Teacher agency is attracting research attention, given the changed direction in curriculum reform towards local agency in curriculum enactment. However, in the context of instrumental priorities such as performance in national standardised testing, which remain dominant in school systems, enabling teacher agency remains challenging. This paper, part of a larger research project, explores teacher agency in the DCU Changemaker Schools Network (DCU …
Consumers' willingness to pay for an animal welfare food label
Consumers increasingly rate the ethical dimensions of food production, including animal welfare, as important to them but how these concerns influence their food choices remains unclear. To address this, a Discrete Choice Experiment assesses consumers' willingness to pay for chicken meat. The study aims to understand the effects of food labels (RSPCA Assured and Red Tractor), cause-related marketing campaigns, and price on consumers' willingness …
The take-up of Rawls’ theory of the good in philosophy of education
Personal well-being is a central concept in philosophical discussions of education and its aims. Although the work of general philosophers like Nussbaum, Griffin, Raz and Sen on the topic has been influential here, there has been next-to-no interest among philosophers of education in John Rawls’s work on ‘the good’ – in great contrast to interest in his work on ‘the right’, and despite the key place that his theory of the good has in his Theory o…

Enduring Problem of Dualism
Arguments on how religion interfaces with sports are not new, and in particular, sports activity itself has been characterized as religion, namely, “cultural,” “natural,” “civil,” and “folk.” In this article, I want to consider a recent proposal by Shirl Hoffman in Good Game: Christianity and the Culture of Sports. Hoffman attempts to reimagine how the Christian religion and sports should relate (on account of the problems of modern muscular Chri…

F. T. Marinetti's Experiments with Acoustic and Visual Poetry
The present paper identifies evidence of proto-semiotic thinking in Italian Futurist manifestoes and in Marinetti's experimental ‘words-in-freedom’ (parole in libertà). A case is made for approaching visual and acoustic modes of signification in Futurist poetry using Peircean semiotic theory. Readings of iconic and indexical sign-aspects explore the value of quasi-semiotic strategies as reflections of modernity and analyse their role in Futurist …
Hitler's War Poets
Hitler's War Poets, a companion piece to the author's To die for Germany (1990), offers a highly informative introduction to a representative spectrum of conservative-völkisch-nationalist and NS writers who played ‘a major role in building the Nazi literary Pantheon’ (p. 25). It will be useful to monoglot English readers, much of the German literary material also being presented in English translation or via extensive paraphrase. Little comparabl…
The Politics of Agrarian Collapse
While all Central and East European countries have reformed their relationships between agriculture and the state, this process has been particularly fraught in Moldova. The post-Soviet era has witnessed a sustained conflict between communists, agrarian nationalists, and economic liberals over the reform of state and collective farms. However, attempts to enact agrarian nationalist and neoliberal visions of agriculture in Moldova have largely fai…
The decline of Ukrainian agriculture
Despite its undoubted potential, agricultural production in Ukraine has almost halved since the break‐up of the Soviet Union. The sector has been characterized by decapitalization, a fall in real profitability and growth in rural poverty. Ukrainian policy makers have faced a number of dilemmas regarding agricultural reform and how they have dealt with these challenges explains much of the performance of the sector. Three broad challenges are disc…
