  • Musical Resistance in Abderrahmane Sissako’s Timbuktu

    Open Access•Katy Stewart•ARTICLE•Observatorio (OBS•2020

When Abderrahmane Sissako’s film Timbuktu was released in 2014, it attracted a great deal of controversy – as well as an Oscar nomination. Was lauded as an exceptionally artistic, poetic film which brought the world’s attention to the plight of Timbuktu under jihadi rule, but the way in which Sissako chose to humanise jihadists, and the elliptical way in which he constructs the film – missing many of the finer details of the political and militar…

  • Writing the Transatlantic Imaginary in Agualusa's Nação Crioula and Monénembo's Pelourinho

    Open Access•Katy Stewart, Audrey Small•ARTICLE•e-cadernos CES•2016•References: 13

This article explores the complex relationship between African literatures in European languages and the construction of the historical record in Agualusa’s Nação Crioula and Monénembo’s Pelourinho. It problematizes the idealised notion present in lusofonia of the Atlantic triangle as characterised by fluid identities and hybrid spaces, to argue that in both novels boundaries are ruptured but also reinscribed. In exploring unofficial acts of writ…

  • Between memory and erasure: Zézé Gamboa's O Grande Kilapy and the legacy of portuguese colonialism

    Open Access•Katy Stewart•ARTICLE•Comunicação e Sociedade•2016

While the 40th anniversary of the "fall of the Portuguese Empire" has provoked fresh critical approaches to the colonial legacy within Portugal, much less attention has been paid to how memories of colonialism are being reconfigured within contemporary lusophone African cultural production. The films of Angolan director Zézé Gamboa have thus far received very little academic attention, particularly his most recent feature, O Grande Kilapy (2012) …

  • Entre a memória e o seu apagamento: O Grande Kilapy de Zézé Gamboa e o legado do colonialismo português

    Open Access•Katy Stewart•ARTICLE•Comunicação e Sociedade•2016

  • Establishing the female gaze: Narrative subversion in Lucrecia Martel’s La niña santa (2004) and La ciénaga (2001)

    Katy Stewart•ARTICLE•Journal of Iberian & Latin…•2015•References: 2

The films of Lucrecia Martel have provided a locus for academic debate about Argentine art cinema, counter cinema, and the “female/feminist gaze” (Slobodian 2012, The Comparatist 36: 160). This article will build on this scholarship in order to consider the ways in which Martel’s films negotiate the problems of constructing a female gaze through the layering and subversion of multiple, transnational, cinematic conventions. While drawing upon Laur…
