  • Pode a razão crítica favorecer a institucionalidade democrática

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2025

  • The symbolic politics of cultural heritage

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2024•Cited by: 1

This paper highlights the centrality of the social representation of cultural heritage for the symbolic legitimization of a regime and the foundation of its social and cultural policies. The relevance attributed to history, its codification into heritage and the formation of a collective memory are indeed arenas of social practice, power and hegemony. The Portuguese example is a good one, because one can compare contrasting visions of the authori…

  • Art beyond context

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2020•References: 5

This article advocates the awareness that art exists also beyond the context. No doubt that art exists within a context. Still, it goes beyond the context. First, each artistic corpus is a structure in itself. Second, it cannot be solely considered from the point of view of context. So, a double dialogue is needed: between social science and art study, and between social science and art itself. We need a dialogue in the Bakhtinian sense, recogniz…

  • When art meets crisis

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva, Paula Guerra et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2017•Cited by: 5•References: 2

The article focuses on how the Portuguese arts have dealt with the Portuguese crisis, in the years 2011-2014, when the country was subjected to a financial bailout. The approach is based on a cross-section analysis, considering the domains of literature, fine arts, visual arts and cinema, music and performing arts. It emphasizes three distinct and complementary ways through which the relation between arts and society was developed in these years.…

  • Agir na globalização

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2017•References: 2

Globalisation demands collective agency. This is the starting point of the article. First, it considers the ongoing changes regarding space-time and the resources for action. It points out that inequalities vis-à-vis mobility constitute a new and critical dimension of the social divide. Secondly, the article focuses on the prospects for collective agency in the context of globalisation, both for the regulation of its unbalances and for its embedd…

  • Estigma, experimentação e risco

Open Access•Paula Guerra, Tânia Moreira et al.•ARTICLE•Revista crítica de ciências…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva, Elisa Pérez Babo et al.•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2015•Cited by: 1

  • Music and more than music

    Open Access•Paula Guerra, Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural…•2014•Cited by: 8•References: 8

In Western societies, punk represented a benchmark for rupture towards the existing social structure while providing a soundtrack for it. So, it is in this context that we will approach the Portuguese punk considering its importance in a society engaged in relatively recent processes of democratization and modernization. Thus, we propose here to take a look at the punk from its protagonists’ discourses and the text that they form. We will conside…

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Sociologia Problemas e Práticas•2014•References: 3

  • Cultural policies and local development

Augusto Santos Silva, Elisa Pérez Babo et al.•ARTICLE•Portugese Journal of Social…•2012

In Portugal, two levels of public policy implementation are relevant: the national, under government responsibility, and the local, under the responsibility of municipalities. The importance of municipalities in defining cultural public policies has grown, given the expense and the responsibility in launching and managing cultural equipment and arts support. The growing significance of municipalities in the cultural-public-policies scene takes pl…

  • A hetero-regulação dos meios de comunicação social

    Open Access•Augusto Santos Silva•ARTICLE•Comunicação e Sociedade•2007
