The impact of an innovative continuing professional development programme for teachers on self-efficacy and outcome expectancy in the context of outdoor education
Outdoor education represents a pedagogical approach that can foster not only pupils’ learning outcomes but also their interest in natural science and the development of a positive relationship with the surrounding natural environment. Despite its proven benefits, its implementation within formal education remains limited. One of the key influencing factors is teachers, particularly their perceived self-efficacy and outcome expectancy. This study …
Ready to experiment? A closer look at students’ scientific skills in lower secondary education
Experimentation is an essential part of science lessons. By its very nature, it not only gives students the opportunity to explore natural phenomena and processes and to acquire new knowledge but also helps them develop higher-order thinking skills, enhance motivation and stimulate interest in science. However, for experimentation to fulfil these goals, students must possess specific skills that need to be systematically developed throughout thei…

Developing the test of inquiry skills
Teachers can develop science literacy among pupils through Inquiry-Based Science Education. IBSE helps to evolve the inquiry skills necessary for understanding the world of science and nature. To be able to improve the level of inquiry skills systematically, we need to know the current level among pupils. For this reason, we designed a multiple-choice test that measures the level of inquiry skills among 13 to 15 years old pupils. The design of th…

PandemIcons? The Medical Scientist as Iconic Figure in Times of Crisis
In perhaps unparalleled fashion, the ongoing pandemic has showcased the complex entanglements between science and other fields of society, such as politics and the media. This intricate and often conflictive relationship becomes particularly manifest in the controversies surrounding scientific experts, who have been transformed from science communicators into iconic figures since the outbreak of COVID-19. Accordingly, this article examines two of…
Falling through the social safety net? Analysing non‐take‐up of minimum income benefit and monetary social assistance in Austria
Non‐take‐up of means tested benefits is a widespread phenomenon in European welfare states. The paper assesses whether the reform that replaced the monetary social assistance benefit by the minimum income benefit in Austria in 2010/11 has succeeded in increasing take up rates. We use EU‐SILC register data together with the tax‐benefit microsimulation model EUROMOD/SORESI. The results show that the reform led to a significant decrease of non‐take‐…
Intermedia Games—Games Inter Media
While all media are part of intermedial networks, video games are often at the nexus of that network. They not only employ cinematics, embedded books, and in-world television screens for various purposes, but, in our convergence culture, video games also play a vital role in allowing players to explore transmedia storyworlds. At the same time, video games are frequently thematized and remediated in film, television, and literature. Indeed, the ce…
All Teeth and Claws
Since the mid-1980s televised wildlife documentaries have become increasingly spectacular. In particular, documentaries revolving around large predators have not just proliferated, but supported entire networks, as evidenced by Discovery’s Shark Week, which has enjoyed a phenomenal success since its introduction in 1988. Shark Week, as Matthew Lerberg (2016) has shown, epitomizes the representational reductionism which operates across media—shark…
Animals on American Television
Since its early days, American television has offered viewers a wide variety of animal characters. From main characters such as Lassie (Lassie, CBS, 1954–1973), Mister Ed (Mister Ed, CBS, 1961–1966), and BoJack Horseman (BoJack Horseman, Netflix, 2014–) to secondary and tertiary characters such as the cat Lucky in ALF (NBC, 1986–1990), Data’s cat Spot in Star Trek: The Next Generation (syndicated, 1987–1994), and the chicken and the duck in Frien…

Cooking with Hannibal
Food plays a central role in the NBC show Hannibal, Bryan Fuller’s recent re-imagination of the well-known tale about a serial-killing psychiatrist named Dr Hannibal Lecter. This article traces food’s path from procurement via preparation to its consumption. Along this path, the article highlights how the show constantly questions binaries by intelligently interconnecting the eponymous character, who happens to be a cannibal, to his relation to f…
