Dialectics beyond dialectics essay on totality and difference
Dialectics beyond dialectics essay on totality and difference." Modern & Contemporary France, 25(3), pp. 340–341
Roland Barthes'sTravels in China
Considering the style of writing employed in his diaries Travels in China, published posthumously and without the author's permission, this article traces Roland Barthes's uneasy resistance to Maoist propaganda during and after his trip to China with Tel Quel in April 1974. By analysing the elliptical and easily distracted manner in which he records his impressions, the conclusion is that the diaries prefigure the quandary in which Barthes finds …
Raymond depardon and that photograph, beirut 1978
By considering the changing attitude of French photographer, Raymond Depardon, to his iconic action-shot from the war in central Beirut 1978, this article suggests that the Lebanese capital's fate over the last forty years plays a crucial role in Depardon's critique of photojournalism
Bazin and Photography in the Twenty-First Century
According to André Rouillé (2005) the search for photography's ontology is both fruitless and pointless. Six decades after André Bazin's seminal essay, 'The Ontology of the Photographic Image' (1945), there is a concerted attempt to remove photography from the 'reliquary' of death in which Bazin had (seemingly) locked it. Preferring 'genesis' to 'result', Bazin had suggested that photography benefited from an 'essential objectivity' and that it w…

Préparation du romanesque' in Roland Barthes's Reading of Sarrasine
By considering S/Z (1970) as an early example of the romanesque (novelistic) in Roland Barthes's oeuvre, this article considers the generic and thematic anticipation of La Préparation du roman in Barthes's seminars of the late 1960s. It suggests that his seminar notes on Balzac's Sarrasine written in 1968 and 1969 (and on which S/Z is based) are a form of proto-essayism, albeit given as seminars in the institutional context of the Ecole Pratique …
