A brief history of Lord Rutherford's radium
In this paper I give a brief summary of what is known about the acquisition, use and fate of the radium sources that were in the possession of Lord Rutherford during his lifetime. The account is written in two parts, corresponding to the periods from the discovery of radium in 1898 until his death in 1937 and then from 1937 until recent times. The history of Rutherford's radium closely shadows the history of radioactivity, the evolution of nuclea…
The Radium Committee of the Royal Society and the fate of the substances purchased by it
In this article, documents relating to the history of the Radium Committee of the Royal Society are collated for the first time. Founded in 1903, the committee had its status enhanced in 1904, when the Goldsmiths' Company donated £1000 for the establishment of a Radium Research Fund. Two years later the fund was used to purchase 500 kg of pitchblende residues from the Austrian government. The French chemist Armet de Lisle was contracted to perfor…
Towards a cognitive theory of expression
Expression is examined from the viewpoint of communication theory and it is argued that a proper understanding of expression involves an integrated description of both performance and perception. A framework is developed in which to couch a general theory of expression. As an example, a number of algorithms, implemented in Lisp are described which model the performance and perception of rubato. The model is based on two factors: 1) the use of "ph…
A computational model of rubato
Presented is a model of rubato, implemented in Lisp, in which expression is viewed as the mapping of musical structure into the variables of expression. The basic idea is that the performer uses "phrase final lengthening" as a device to reflect some internal representation of the phrase structure. The representation is based on Lardahl and Jackendoff's time-span reduction. The basic heuristic in the model is recursive involving look-ahead and pla…
