  • What Do We Learn About Fascism If We Ask a Lesbian Feminist

Laurie Essig•ARTICLE•Signs: Journal of Women in…•2025

Ask a lesbian feminist who has been paying attention to global fascism about Donald Trump’s election, and she will tell you there’s nothing unusual about what’s happening in the United States. There are similar movements around the world. Trump and his allies successfully mobilized “gender” as an internal enemy to shore up his base of supporters. Like Vladimir Putin or Viktor Orbán or Ron DeSantis, Trump was able to convince voters that “gender i…

  • Belief in Hopeless Times: The Once and Future Lesbian in Putin's Russia and Beyond

    Laurie Essig•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2022

In this article, written 2 1/2 years before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I consider how lesbians and other queer women created lives in what was an increasingly totalitarian regime. Borrowing from Black queer feminist Afro-futurism, I try to open up space for survival in un-survivable conditions without in anyway suggesting that anti-Blackness and the anti-queer regime of Vladimir Putin are the same. In order to figure out how the tools of Afro-…

  • What's the Use of Feminist and Queer Theory: On Messy Methods, Archives, and Objects

Hemangini Gupta, Carly Thomsen et al.•ARTICLE•Feminist Studies•2022

By thinking with Feminist and Queer Studies, what new languages, objects of study, archives, and methods are enabled for those with other disciplinary trainings? This article uses as a case study a recent workshop that we—two Ph.D.s in Feminist Studies—convened for our colleagues who are affiliated with Gender, Sexuality, and Feminist Studies and had expressed their desire to be in conversation with current Feminist and Queer Studies debates. We …

  • Lesbian, feminist, Terf: A queer attack on feminist studies

Carly Thomsen, Laurie Essig•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2021•Cited by: 9•References: 10

While much has been said about the diversity industry and about transexclusionary radical feminists (TERFs), little has examined their relationship to one another or to academic feminist, queer, and trans studies. This article considers a "queer attack on feminist studies" at our small liberal arts college as a case study for thinking through these relations. A handful of students and diversity staff termed feminist studies faculty TERFs not beca…

In Conceiving Masculinity , Liberty Walther Barnes gives us an illustrative example of how bodies, technologies and gender get entangled in ways that make it difficult to figure out where one ends and the other begins. Take the ‘problem’ of infertility. It turns out that a certain segment of the American public not only believes …

  • Bury Their Hearts”: Some Thoughts on the Specter of Homosexuality Haunting Russia

    Laurie Essig•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 2

Russia’s anti-gay propaganda laws and anti-gay sentiment have shocked many in the West. They shouldn’t have. In Soviet Russia, the homosexual was seen as a sign of foreign pollution, a temporary aberration—like a criminal or a disease—that will disappear in a more socialist future. As a result, queer Russians were not so much the stable homosexual species that they have been in the past 150 years in the West as much as momentary communities of de…

  • Phallus Envy

    Laurie Essig•ARTICLE•Journal of Lesbian Studies•2008•Cited by: 1

To be a lesbian in academe is to occupy the ghostly world of the Abject. We cannot be and therefore we can only manifest in easily recognized forms: androgyne, mannish lesbian, nice gay girl, ball-busting bitches, and asexual whatisits. Our only hope is to obtain the ever-enviable Phallus, but even this strategy is limited by the Phallus's tendency to detach as the slightest sign of femaleness
