What Does the Keane PTSD Scale of the MMPI Measure? Repeated Measurements in a Group of Patients with Major Depression
We looked at a group of depressed patients in a treatment study, none of whom by study design had Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). High scores on the PTSD (PK) scale could only be due to factors other than PTSD. Despite the absence of PTSD, we observed an extremely high false positive rate in a group given the MMPI on multiple occasions. 92% of the subjects had at least one T score at or above 65 on the PK scale. 44% of the men and the women…
Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Relaxation Training, and Tricyclic Antidepressant Medication in the Treatment of Depression
Outcomes of seven treatment trials comparing cognitive behavioral therapy to treatment with tricyclic antidepressant medication in major depressive disorder have been quite similar to one another. This led us to question whether treatment outcome in time-limited studies reflected a unique effect of cognitive behavioral therapy. To test the uniqueness hypothesis, relaxation training, a nonpharmacologic, noncognitive treatment, was chosen as a comp…
Prescribing Therapy for Depression: The Role of Learned Resourcefulness, a Failure to Replicate
Work in 1985 by Simons, Lustman, Wetzel, and Murphy showed that a patient's score on Rosenbaum's self-control scale predicted differential response to treatments for depression, with a high score predicting a good outcome with talking therapy and a low score a good outcome with drug therapy. This study of 37 patients did not replicate those findings. Using the same paradigm, we predicted response correctly 7 times and incorrectly 16 times, a clea…

They May Know English, But Are They Ready To Teach It
Candor characterizes the manner in which Mr. Murphy analyzes a conven tional program of preparation to teach English in high school. He castigates the system which produces a young college graduate who enters his first high-school teaching position with a complacent readi ness to "do unto others" as he was treated in his concluding college experiences. The author, who is Associate Professor of Edu cation, The Pennsylvania State College, State Col…
