  • Historical Semantics in Medieval Studies

Bernhard Jussen, Gregor Rohmann•ARTICLE•Contributions to the History of…•2015•Cited by: 1

Between 1972 and 1992 Reinhart Koselleck, Otto Brunner, and Werner Conze published the famous seven volumes of Geschichtliche Grundbegriffe: Historisches Lexikon zur Politisch-Sozialen Sprache in Deutschland. The handbook was, in its day, a milestone for any historian interested in turning from the history of ideas to the history of semantics, of the verbal (and non-verbal) production of meaning. In his introduction, published in 1972, Reinhart K…

  • Dancing on the Threshold

Gregor Rohmann•ARTICLE•Contributions to the History of…•2015

“Dancing mania” and “St. Vitus dance” were culturally formed illness concepts that enabled late medieval people in the Rhine area to act out states of liminality. The semiotics of these trace back to ancient Platonic cosmology, which had been transmitted into medieval theology by late antique Neoplatonism. In this article the iteration of these motifs especially through the early and high Middle Ages is scrutinized. When “dancing mania” emerged i…

Les chercheurs ont tenté d’expliquer cela par les structures économiques différentes entre les centres du capitalisme naissant, comme Nuremberg ou Augsbourg, et les villes de la Ligue hanséatique, formées par le commerce maritime. Une comp…

  • The Invention of Dancing Mania

    Open Access•Gregor Rohmann•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 1

Medieval ‘dancing mania’ has until recently remained an enigma in medical and religious history. This is because scholars tend to view it as an invariable medical syndrome instead of examining it as an example of the historicity of illness as semantic network. Taking the latter approach allows for grasping the phenomenon as a form of insanity specific to the Rhine basin of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, though one whose roots can be tra…
