  • Timing of the intention to act reflects action feedback expectancy

    Open Access•George Evangelou, James W Moore•ARTICLE•Cognition•2026

There is ongoing debate concerning the neurocognitive basis of intention; in particular, whether it is based on predictive or postdictive processes. We addressed this by manipulating the uncertainty of receiving haptic feedback with an action. The perceived time of intention (known as 'W' judgements) was measured using the Libet clock method. In Experiment 1 (N = 36 adults), haptic feedback was either 100% present or absent, or random (50%). W wa…

  • Investigating the effect of cognitive load on the intentionality bias

    Open Access•A E Eisenkoeck, Antonia Eisenkoeck et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2025

According to Rosset’s dual-process model of intention attribution, our judgements of intentionality can be guided either by an automatic process leading to intentional explanations of behaviour or by a higher-level and cognitively more demanding process enabling unintentional explanations of behaviour. Based on this model, under conditions of compromised cognitive capacity, individuals should judge more behaviour to be intentional rather than uni…

  • Examining the effect of Libet clock stimulus parameters on temporal binding

Open Access•Bianca Elena Ivanof, Devin B Terhune et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Research•2022

Temporal binding refers to the subjective temporal compression between actions and their outcomes. It is widely used as an implicit measure of sense of agency, that is, the experience of controlling our actions and their consequences. One of the most common measures of temporal binding is the paradigm developed by Haggard, Clark and Kalogeras (2002) based on the Libet clock stimulus. Although widely used, it is not clear how sensitive the tempora…

  • Corruption and the Ethical Standards of British Public Life

    James Moore, James W Moore•BOOK•Anti-Corruption in History•2017

This chapter goes deeper into a period that is often seen as one in which early modern “old corruption” was finally eliminated in Britain: namely, the period from 1880–1914. It argues that anticorruption measures and developments have often been held to account for this change. This chapter then changes perspective and, based on the author’s own analysis of local politics, makes clear that at the local and municipal level corruption remained a pr…

  • What Is the Sense of Agency and Why Does it Matter?

    Open Access•James W Moore•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychology•2016

Sense of agency refers to the feeling of control over actions and their consequences. In this article I summarize what we currently know about sense of agency; looking at how it is measured and what theories there are to explain it. I then explore some of the potential applications of this research, something that the sense of agency research field has been slow to identify and implement. This is a pressing concern given the increasing importance…

  • Exploring implicit and explicit aspects of sense of agency

    Open Access•James W Moore, D Middleton et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2012

Sense of agency refers to the sense of initiating and controlling actions in order to influence events in the outside world. Recently, a distinction between implicit and explicit aspects of sense of agency has been proposed, analogous to distinctions found in other areas of cognition, notably learning. However, there is yet no strong evidence supporting separable implicit and explicit components of sense of agency. The so-called 'Perruchet paradi…

  • Sense of agency in health and disease

    Open Access•James W Moore, Paul C Fletcher•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2012

Sense of agency (SoA) is a compelling but fragile experience that is augmented or attenuated by internal signals and by external cues. A disruption in SoA may characterise individual symptoms of mental illness such as delusions of control. Indeed, it has been argued that generic SoA disturbances may lie at the heart of delusions and hallucinations that characterise schizophrenia. A clearer understanding of how sensorimotor, perceptual and environ…

  • Sense of agency, associative learning, and schizotypy

    Open Access•James W Moore, A Dickinson et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2011

Despite the fact that the role of learning is recognised in empirical and theoretical work on sense of agency (SoA), the nature of this learning has, rather surprisingly, received little attention. In the present study we consider the contribution of associative mechanisms to SoA. SoA can be measured quantitatively as a temporal linkage between voluntary actions and their external effects. Using an outcome blocking procedure, it was shown that tr…

    James W Moore•ARTICLE•Comparative Strategy•1994•Cited by: 1

Recent military equipment purchases (e.g., kilo‐class submarines from the former Soviet Union, and Scud B/C missiles from North Korea) have focused attention on Iran's rearmament program. Concerns have been raised that this program has provided Iran with the capabilities needed to achieve military hegemony in the Persian Gulf or the Middle East more generally. This article examines these concerns and seeks to correct some of the misconceptions th…

In a recent number of this Journal, D. Marc Kilgour describes a formal analysis of the power of provinces and citizens to effect a constitutional amendment, given the requirements specified by paragraph 38(l)(b) of the Constitution Act, 1982. He concludes that the amending formula—essentially the Fulton-Favreau formula proposed in 1964—distributes power more equitably among provinces than it does among citizens when power measures the capacity of…
