  • Willingly and with Pleasure: Desiring Politics in the Couronnement de Louis

    Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•Exemplaria•2024•References: 3

This essay describes how the aristocratic hero’s loyalty toward his king and lord is produced, sustained, and put to politically effective use in the chanson de geste the Couronnement de Louis by reading the twelfth-century poem for evidence of its hero’s desire. In providing Charlemagne with an unwilling heir in the form of the titular Louis, I argue, the Couronnement breaks open the ideology of lineal inheritance and hereditary monarchy and lay…

    Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•QED A Journal in GLBTQ Worldmaking•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 9

In both the social sciences and pop cultural representation, gay men’s open relationships are consistently described according to a contradictory logic in which coupled gay men may enjoy non-exclusive sexual practices because they are able to separate sex from emotional attachment and only on the condition that they separate sex from emotional attachment. Since the emotional response to outside sexual partners that should not occur always is a th…

  • Tiptoeing the Line Between National Security and Protectionism: A Comparative Approach to Foreign Direct Investment Screening in the United States and European Union

    Open Access•Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•International Journal of Legal…•2019•Cited by: 1

Weaponization of state-backed, foreign investments by China is an emerging national security threat in the United States and the European Union. The U.S. and E.U. have espoused similar policy goals—to address the threat without closing their markets to foreign direct investment—while fostering increased cooperation between allied partners in screening transactions. On the surface, the recent, China-specific measures taken by the U.S. and the inve…

  • From Public–Private Virtue to Cultural-Corporate Amoeba: Mr Blobby and the Rise of BBC Worldwide During the 1990s

Jason Jacobs, Deborah J Thomas•ARTICLE•Historical Journal Of Film Radio…•2018

In 1991, a BBC taskforce inquired into the organization’s efficiency. One of its reports, BBC the Entrepreneur, observed that ‘commerce is no longer incompatible with the BBC’s core businesses’ and that, ‘entrepreneurialism was a requirement of the 1980s and will still have an important part to play in the public sector in the 1990s. The BBC’s involvement in commerce signals that it is a part of the market.’ In fact, the BBC had participated in t…

  • The persistence of television: The case ofThe Good Life

    Open Access•F Bonner, Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•Critical Studies in Television…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 16

We argue here that rather than being threatened by new modes of delivery and of viewing, television persists and that this can be charted by examining the familiarity and recognisability of television across the post-World War II period, looking at British, American and Australian programmes, personalities and practices, including promotion. The article presents a case study of the BBC sitcom The Good Life to show some ways that television persis…

  • Raising Gays

    Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•GLQ A Journal of Lesbian and Gay…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Taking critical aim at an emergent cultural demand for family "acceptance" of queer youth and at the trope of parental love offered "no matter what," this essay resists the occlusion of long-standing traditions of queer pedagogy and acculturation in contemporary "pro-LGBT" discourses. Via an analysis of the musical sitcom Glee, the essay tracks how an insistence on parental acceptance displaces the knowledge, experience, and instruction of other …

  • An Inheritance of Violence: Patrimony, Vassal Service, and Conquest in the Charroi de Nîmes

    Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•Exemplaria•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 8

In the epic imaginary of the twelfth-century chanson de geste the Charroi de Nîmes, the political bond between a lord and his vassal reproduces the expectations, tensions, and aggressions of the relationship between aristocratic fathers and sons. The displacement of this negative affect is the ultimate cause of one of the Charroi’s more conventional aspects, its depiction of a religiously sanctioned conquest of a rich city in Muslim Spain. My rea…

  • Issues of judgement and value in television studies

    Open Access•Jason Jacobs•ARTICLE•International Journal of Cultural…•2001•Cited by: 21•References: 1

The common critical understanding of television is that it is primarily a medium for communication rather than for artistic accomplishment. The conceptualization of television as a relay device tends to downplay its successes as a medium for artistic expression. In order to explore the ramifications of this observation, the paper focuses on recent television dramas - in particular ER and other medical dramas - as indicative of artistic accomplish…
