  • Can Brexit be photographed? Six photographic projects raising critical questions about Britain’s exit from the European Union (2016-2020)

    Open Access•Mathilde Bertrand•ARTICLE•Revue LISA / LISA e-journal•2021

Based on a selection of photographic projects produced between 2016 and 2020, this article examines the way British and non-British professional photographers have responded to the question of Britain’s exit from the European Union. Each of the six projects sheds light on and problematises different social, economic and ideological stakes raised by Brexit, at different moments of a political process started in 2016. Questions that concern artists…

  • Cultural Battles

    Open Access•Mathilde Bertrand•ARTICLE•Revue française de civilisation…•2021

The emergence and development of the community arts movement in the UK from the late 1960s was premised on a critique of dominant cultural production and radical objectives of social, cultural and political change. Inspired by ground-breaking work in popular education and theatre (Freire, Boal) and nurtured by the counterculture of the 1960s, community artists defended the idea that artists had a political role to play in contexts outside of the …

  • Eddie Chambers, World Is Africa

    Mathilde Bertrand•ARTICLE•Critique d’art•2021

  • From Mods to Young British Artists

Mathilde Bertrand, Phœbe Hadjimarkos Clarke•ARTICLE•Critique d’art•2021

The United Kingdom's exit from the European Union in 2021 will no doubt continue to generate many discussions surrounding the factors that caused it. The outcome of the 2016 referendum was influenced by nostalgia for a mythologised past as a strong nation, hope for the return of political sovereignty, as well as a powerful rhetoric of border control. Has the British art world, which has firmly established its position on the international scene o…

  • Noni Stacey, Photography of Protest and Community

    Mathilde Bertrand•ARTICLE•Critique d’art•2021

  • The Half Moon Photography Workshop and Camerawork

    Mathilde Bertrand•ARTICLE•Photography and Culture•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 1

The history of the radical photography collective Half Moon Photography Workshop has not so far been the subject of in-depth research in accounts of 1970s British photography. At a moment when photography was gradually gaining recognition as an art form, its radical voice and independent stance played a fundamental role in shaping the photographic landscape in Britain. Between 1972 and 1985, Half Moon Photography Workshop initiated pioneering deb…
