Women’s Pathways: Replication and Generalizability Across State Prison Systems
This study demonstrates the replication and validation of a prior model of women’s pathways to prison that was initially developed in California Women’s prisons and subsequently implemented in the Massachusetts Department of Correction (MADOC) women’s prison in 2013. The following four main pathways were identified: (1) Quasi-normal, least disturbed, drug and situational offending; (2) lifelong abused and depressed drug abusing women; (3) sociali…

Women’s Pathways to Serious and Habitual Crime: A Person-Centered Analysis Incorporating Gender Responsive Factors
Qualitative approaches for identifying and characterizing women’s pathways to crime are being augmented by quantitative methods. This study applies quantitative taxonomic methods in disaggregating a large sample of women offenders from a prison population to identify diverse pathway prototypes. An array of gender-responsive and gender-neutral factors and full criminal histories was used to characterize each pathway. Cross-sample and cross-method …

The Manoeuvre
A themed issue of Routledge’s major international peer-reviewed journal Visual Studies : Walking, Ethnography and Arts Practice (published on behalf of the International Visual Sociology Association) was given over to the proceedings and Brennan’s work formed the basis of his contribution and the content of Myer’s article: ‘The Art of Conversive Wayfaring’
Evaluating the Predictive Validity of the Compas Risk and Needs Assessment System
This study examines the statistical validation of a recently developed, fourth-generation (4G) risk—need assessment system (Correctional Offender Management Profiling for Alternative Sanctions; COMPAS) that incorporates a range of theoretically relevant criminogenic factors and key factors emerging from meta-analytic studies of recidivism. COMPAS's automated scoring provides decision support for correctional agencies for placement decisions, offe…

Use and effectiveness of psychological self‐care strategies for interstitial cystitis
We explore two questions. First, What psychological self-care strategies do women use to manage interstitial cystitis (IC), and how effective are they? Second, How do self-reported cognitive-behavioral and stress reduction activities compare with the coping options hypothesized by Draucker (1991) to be available to women diagnosed with IC? One hundred thirty-eight women with IC rated the use and effectiveness of 53 psychological self-care strateg…

Rushdie, Islam, and Postcolonial Criticism
In spite of a good deal of very bad journalism, the fatwa did prompt informative, even thoughtful, writing. Some reviews printed in the immediate wake of the Rushdie scandal explained key Quranic names, translated imported Urdu terms from The Satanic Verses (SV), and even (in the case of Bharati Mukherjee's unusually smart piece in The Village Voice), gave some feel for Rushdie's fictional unfolding. In academic circles afterwards, we found a goo…

Classification: An Overview of Selected Methodological Issues
Classification methods have two fundamentally different but related goals. The first is to build new classifications. The second is to assign unknown cases to existing classifications. Many traditional offender criminological classification systems are of questionable value, partly because of confusion concerning purposes and roles of classification. The link between purpose and method has recently become more important because of the emergence o…
Classification for Control in Jails and Prisons
Classification systems provide means for maintaining institutional safety and order, for providing inmates protection and services, and for managing and allocating personnel and resources. A traditional "judgmental" approach is being largely displaced by objective data-based procedures. The two basic components of institutional classification are the selection of risk factors and the formulation of decision rules. Risk factors in use include cons…

Mapping The Diversity among Runaways: A Descriptive Multivariate Analysis of Selected Social Psychological Background Conditions
THIS article discusses the diversity of runaway youth within a framework of descriptive taxonomic analysis. First, a review and critique of prior classification systems of runaways is provided. The inadequacies of the prior systems are reviewed. A descriptive taxonomy of runaway youth is then developed using cluster-analytic methods. The attribute space for this analysis is developed from an integration of strain and control theories and includes…
A Taxonomy of Runaway Youth
The intuitive nonempirical approach to the development of typologies of runaway youth is challenged. The multidimensionality of runaway activity is supported, and six types of runaway youth are empirically delineated and described. Findings suggest that two of the six runaway types profiled fit the theoretical model presented in the paper and account for almost half of the runaway youth reviewed. The data indicate, however, that large numbers of …
