The intuitive nonempirical approach to the development of typologies of runaway youth is challenged. The multidimensionality of runaway activity is supported, and six types of runaway youth are empirically delineated and described. Findings suggest that two of the six runaway types profiled fit the theoretical model presented in the paper and account for almost half of the runaway youth reviewed. The data indicate, however, that large numbers of runaways are not characterized by attributes commonly associated with such youth
