  • The Self-consuming Commodity: Audiences, Users, and the Riddle of Digital Labor

    Open Access•Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Television & New Media•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 8

This article reexamines the digital labor debate in light of its inheritance of the “audience commodity” problematic. It argues that prevailing approaches to the problem of digital labor proceed from a crucial misunderstanding of the economic status and function of advertising in general and in the social media industry in particular. To remedy this problem, it offers an analysis of social media systems as market monopolies that organize a self-d…

  • The digital potlatch: The uses of uselessness in the digital economy

    Open Access•Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•New Media & Society•2019•References: 11

Drawing on the century-long preoccupation with premodern or “primitive” economic forms that has shaped the social sciences, this essay argues that the political economy of social networking platforms is structured like a potlatch. Understanding this structure and its dynamics is indispensable for grasping the social, economic and cultural preconditions and implications of communicative capitalism

  • Capitalizing on the Dialectical Economy of Hegemony: Laclau, populism and the liberal wager

    Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2012

This essay offers a symptomatic reading of Laclau's On Populist Reason, arguing that his discursive theory of politics remains needlessly trapped within a restricted, recuperative economy of the signifier. As a result, Laclau is characteristically unable either to perform or to recognize precisely the sorts of rhetorical gestures that his theory specifies as paradigmatic of radical politics. The problem emerges with particular urgency and force i…

  • Development of Adaptive Competence in Adulthood

Open Access•Marion Perlmutter, Michael Kaplan et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2010

This paper summarizes research on adult development guided by a theoretical perspective that assumes general types of developmental processes deriving from different sources of input and resulting in distinct developmental trajectories. The research examined effects of age and experience on job skill. A preliminary study identified the nature of expertise in food-service jobs, and a main study investigated performance differences related to age a…

  • Rebel Citizenship and the Cunning of the Liberal Imaginary in Thelma & Louise

    Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Communication and Critical/Cultural…•2008

Through a reading of the critical reception of Thelma & Louise, this essay argues that contemporary feminist criticism would benefit by taking into account its often tacit presupposition of a liberal model of citizenship. Critics praise the film for challenging the normative masculinity of film genres or for subverting the phallocentrism of the symbolic order, failing to note that the women's gender rebellion serves to support liberal principles.…

  • Imagining Citizenship as Friendship in The Big Chill

    Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Quarterly Journal of Speech•2005

This essay stages a theoretically driven critique of Lawrence Kasdan's film The Big Chill as a productive example of a constitutive contradiction animating the liberal political imaginary. In particular, it argues that liberalism relies irreducibly on an underexamined conception of friendship to supply its model of citizenship as a distinctive, ideologically overdetermined form of sociability and demonstrates the de-politicizing effect this relia…

  • Is There a Causal Link between Maltreatment and Adolescent Pregnancy? A Literature Review

    Lynn Blinn-Pike, Lynn Blinn‐pike et al.•ARTICLE•Perspectives on Sexual and…•2002

CONTEXT: Despite a sizable amount of research addressing the relationship between violence and women's reproductive health, it has not been shown whether there is sufficient evidence of a causal link between childhood maltreatment and subsequent adolescent pregnancy. METHODS: Three databases (Medline, PsychiNFO and SocioFile) were searched for studies published between 1980 and 2000 relating maltreatment and adolescent pregnancy. The review was l…

  • New York City Tavern Violence and the Creation of a Working-Class Male Identity

Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Journal of the Early Republic•1995•Cited by: 3

On the evening of December 29, , 1829, Barney Murphy peacefully drank a pint of wine at the Citizen's Retreat. Suddenly two other clients at this neighborhood tavern, John Bufsing and William Kinkaid, dragged Murphy into the center of the barroom, cutting his face with a knife a shocking manner. Although tavern keeper James C. Smith broke up the fight, Murphy later returned with his wife Margaret and his brother James, along with a group of neigh…

  • The kiddie-infant descriptive instrument for emotional states (Kidies): An instrument for the measurement of affective state in infancy and early childhood

    Open Access•Daniel N Stern, Kristine MacKain et al.•ARTICLE•Infant Mental Health Journal•1992•References: 7

An objective instrument is described for measuring several affect states in infants and young children (KIDIES). The scoring system is ethologically based, describing the intensity and the frequency of each affect. It is midway between a fine-grained microanalytic method and a global subjective one. It aims to achieve the balance between quantitative rigor and feasibility needed for large-number clinical research. This report includes a descripti…

  • Estimating Growth of Inbred Rats for Behavioral and Biological Study

    Open Access•Michael Kaplan, Eugenie F Kaplan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

  • Independence of Noxious Stimulus Intensity and Measures of Respiratory Rate and Irregularity

    Open Access•Michael Kaplan•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1959

Repeated exposure of the albino rat to 0.5-min. durations of aversive light affects amplitude of respiratory movements. The predominant change appears to be an increase over pre-stimulation levels, and the function relating magnitude of this increase to aversive light intensity passes through a maximum between 11 1 and 530 millilamberts. The data were presented in a previous communication (7) . The present report extends the account of that study…
