Repeated exposure of the albino rat to 0.5-min. durations of aversive light affects amplitude of respiratory movements. The predominant change appears to be an increase over pre-stimulation levels, and the function relating magnitude of this increase to aversive light intensity passes through a maximum between 11 1 and 530 millilamberts. The data were presented in a previous communication (7) . The present report extends the account of that study to breathing rate and attempts also to deal with some properties of respiratory irregularity. Some investigators have undertaken to quantify irregularity (e.g., 3, 6, 10, 11, 12), but the usual practice is to refer to it verbally and provide illustrative sections of records (e.g., 5, 9 ) . It would seem, however, that a regularityirregularity dimension could be related to moment-to-moment variation in rate, amplitude, and perhaps wave-form and other properties of successive breathing cycles by employing appropriate variability measures. Thus, an increase in the dispersion of one or more of these properties might lead us to speak of an increase in respiratory irregularity. This is the conception that underlies the present treatment.
