  • Water Banking

    Open Access•Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach, Sheryl Luzzadder‐beach et al.•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

Water banking is a water conservation strategy that, like currency, takes physical and/or virtual forms. Water banking varies geographically with the temporal and spatial availability of accessible fresh water. Water banking therefore tracks the water budget closely, considering both supply and demand, and can be thought of as an enhancement of the budget's storage component. As the budgetary and banking language implies, there may also be trade …

  • Aquifers

    Open Access•Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach, Sheryl Luzzadder‐beach•CHAPTER•International Encyclopedia of…•2017

Aquifers are underground, saturated, water‐bearing geologic formations. The top of the water table defines the division between the phreatic zone and the overlying vadose zone. Water at or below the water table in an aquifer is referred to as groundwater. Water above the water table in the vadose zone is commonly referred to as soil water. Aquifers are composed of a wide variety of geologic units or matrices, and are created by numerous geologic …

  • Paleoecology and Geoarchaeology at El Palmar and the El Zotz Region, Guatemala

    Open Access•Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach, Sheryl Luzzadder‐beach et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2016•Cited by: 3•References: 21

A new paleoecology record from the El Palmar Cival adds to the emerging geoarchaeological record of El Zotz, Guatemala. El Palmar's 3 m stratigraphic record began in the Archaic period before 1500 B.C. at or just before initial Maya impacts. From the lowest level, Late Archaic organic deposition, with evidence for diverse tropical forest and a steady water table, transitioned to Early Preclassic clay deposition, decreased forest taxa, three known…

  • Water Resources of the Chunchucmil Maya

    Open Access•Sheryl Luzzadder-Beach, Sheryl Luzzadder‐beach•ARTICLE•Geographical Review•2000•Cited by: 13•References: 21

Chunchucmil, on the Yucatán Peninsula, was densely populated in the Maya Late Classic period (ca. a.d. 550–830), even though it depends principally on groundwater. In the 1990s, hydrologic investigations were conducted to determine whether groundwater could have met domestic and agricultural needs. The region's groundwater is near the surface and is influenced by sea‐level fluctuations; however, geochemical analysis revealed that groundwater qual…
