Water banking is a water conservation strategy that, like currency, takes physical and/or virtual forms. Water banking varies geographically with the temporal and spatial availability of accessible fresh water. Water banking therefore tracks the water budget closely, considering both supply and demand, and can be thought of as an enhancement of the budget's storage component. As the budgetary and banking language implies, there may also be trade or water economics components to this practice, in addition to the simple concept of saving water for a nonrainy day.
