The Medicalization of Black Resistance
International Psychology Advocacy for the Integration of Social Determinants of Health identified by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Health inequity is pervasive, and at the same time, different perspectives of what “health” is change the definition of health inequity across cultures. That said, some lack access to healthcare, and during the pandemic, this has become even more evident. The noble goal of reaching health equity should guide efforts of psychologists, recognizing the integration of clinical care and population health within the framework of public health, in line …
Health inequities and social determinants of health in refugee and immigrant communities
This article evaluates and elucidates the intersections across social and economic determinants of health and social structures that maintain current inequities and structural violence with a focus on the impact on imMigrants (immigrants and migrants), refugees, and those who remain invisible (e.g., people without immigration status who reside in the United States) from Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities. Psychology has a history …
Covid-19 – International Psychology’s Role in Addressing Healthcare Disparities and Ethics in Marginalized Communities
This conceptual paper provides an overview of the impact of COVID-19 on healthcare disparities and particularly its impact on marginalized communities. This critical analysis addresses the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 10, and 16, which include health and well-being, reduction of inequality between and within countries, and the need for peaceful and inclusive societies. Offense Classification and Social Facilitation in Juvenile Delinquency
Considerable research has investigated the effects of social facilitation on either positive or neutral behaviors, but little if any research has examined whether the presence of others can lead to greater levels of negative behavior. The purpose of this project was to explore the influence of social facilitation on patterns and severity of offenses committed by juvenile delinquents. Study l compared the severity of crime (as measured by the offe…
The Family-of-Origin Scale With Adolescents
The Family-of-Origin Scale (FOS) is a 40 item, ten-subscale, Likert instrument founded upon psychodynamic models of family functioning. The FOS is based upon two subordinate constructs - Autonomy and Intimacy - associated with positive individual adjustment. The original FOS was designed to assess adults' retrospective views of their family. The scale has been recently modified to assess adolescents' perceptions of current family functioning. The…

Relation of Cognitive Functioning to Daily Living Skills in a Geriatric Population
A modified version of the Community Competence Scale was administered along with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Revised (WAIS--R) to 40 geriatric patients with suspected dementia. Scores on the Competence Scale, a measure of functional daily living skills, were correlated .72 with Full Scale IQs and .77 with Verbal IQs and moderately correlated (.55) with Performance IQs. A number of significant correlations were found between WAIS--R sub…
Client characteristics as determinants of intervention modality and therapy progress
The relationship between client characteristics and assignment to family or individual therapy and therapy progress was examined in 131 child cases. Assignment to family therapy was related to help-seeking variables, suggesting that the recommendation followed a therapeutic rationale. History of prior services and client's race were both associated with levels of progress, with results indicating benefits from previous therapy but problems of "fi…
Family Environments of Children with School Behavior Problems
The Family Environment Scale was administered to 46 mothers whose children exhibited behavior problems at school and who had been referred for psychoeducational evaluation. When scores were compared with the norms for both nondistressed and distressed families, significant differences were noted on nine and five of the 10 subscales. Such findings suggest that this sample exhibits family environments that are more structured than those of the norm…
Premature birth and its later effects
Family Environments of Continuing and Noncontinuing College Students
The Family Environment Scale was administered to 46 currently enrolled undergraduate college students and 20 students who withdrew from the university. A significant effect was found for the independence sub-scale on which the noncontinuing students scored lower. Means and standard deviations for both groups are provided
Assessment and Treatment of Social Contexts
This paper presents a description and justification for conducting an interactional therapy. Such a therapy is based on the analysis of and intervention in social contexts. An examination of the recent history of interactional assessment and therapy from social psychological and psychiatric perspectives is presented. The chapter concludes with a description of how personal and therapeutic realities are constructed. Research findings supportive of…
The community competence scale in the placement of the deinstitutionalized mentally ill
Little systematic research has been directed towards the determination of appropriate residential placements for deinstitutionalized psychiatric patients. A previous study suggested that the Community Competence Scale (CCS), a 124-item multiscale instrument, had potential utility for community placement decisions. In the present study, the CCS was administered to 52 deinstitutionalized patients placed in an urban boarding home, a rural boarding h…
