  • Global potential of integrated biorefineries for leaf protein and sugar: Producing sustainable food and preventing starvation in catastrophes

Open Access•Juan B García Martínez, Jeffray Behr et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Production and…•2026

To accommodate population growth and shifting diets, the global protein supply must increase. Simultaneously, rising climate variability increases agricultural yield shocks, disrupting conventional crops. Worse, global catastrophes such as nuclear war or pandemics could collapse the global food system. Here, we turn to the potential of grasslands and plentiful legume biomass (e.g., alfalfa, clover) to address these challenges. We demonstrate the …

  • Health as a Social System: Luhmann's Theory Applied to Health Systems. An Introduction

    Open Access•João Costa•BOOK•Health As a Social System•2023

While it has become fashionable in the arena of international health to think about health systems, the theoretical underpinning of Niklas Luhmann's vast and productive theory has been given too little consideration in the field. It is rich in concepts that can facilitate a fuller understanding of what health systems are. João Costa applies these concepts and shows the analytical possibilities they open up. He argues concisely how Luhmann's Socia…

  • A Gente: Pronominal status and agreement revisited

João Costa, Sandra Pereira•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•2013

The status of the expression a gente (lit. the people) in European Portuguese is the topic of this paper. We revisit its classical analysis, treating it as a pronoun, and the explanation for the patterns of agreement it may trigger on the inflected verb. In particular, the paper addresses Taylor's (2009) argument against the pronominal status of a gente, and argues that it can be analyzed as a regular DP. We compare a gente with other pronouns, s…

  • Embedded null subjects in Capeverdean

    Open Access•João Costa, Fernanda Pratas•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistics•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The status of Capeverdean as a pro -drop language is controversial. Baptista (2002) contends that this Portuguese-based creole has null referential subjects with some types of predicates, while Pratas (2002, 2007) proposes that it has only expletive null subjects. She argues that the rare cases of root null subjects can be analyzed as instances of null expletives. The aim of this paper is to show that in Capeverdean there is an asymmetry in the d…

  • On the behavior of adverbs in sentence-final context

    João Costa•ARTICLE•The Linguistic Review•1997

This paper provides evidence in favor of the non-existence of base right-adjunction for adverbs. The argument comes from asymmetries in the interpretation of ambiguous adverbs depending on their position (sentence-internal or sentence-final). The apparent right-adjonction effects will be derived by leftward movement of the modifiees of the adverbs, according to the framework outlined in Barbiers (1995). Prosodic effects that improve some otherwis…

It is proposed that postverbal subjects of unaccusative verbs are not necessarily assigned nominative Case. The contrast in behavior between subjects of intransitive verbs and subjects…
